Kamas, Utah is located on the outskirts of the Uinta Wasatch Cache National Forest, less than 50 miles east of Salt Lake City, the nearest large city. The town is named after camas, a favorite food of the local American Indian tribe that first settled the area. The town's claim to fame is that gold from a mine in the local area was used to help build the Mormon temple in Salt Lake City.

As it's so near the mountains, outdoor recreation is the primary draw for Kamas. Activities such as: fishing, waterfalls, hiking, snow sports and 4-wheel-drive trails abound. The Great Outdoors

Jordanelle State Park is located less than 20 miles from Kamas, on the shores of the Jordanelle Reservoir. There are two Walmarts located within 20 miles of town and camping may be allowed at these locations. Just check with the manager to get permission. The city also features a few grocery stores and numerous gas stations within 30 miles of Kamas that might meet your needs. Please speak with the managers of those locales regarding possible overnight camping accommodations.
