First settled in the mid-19th century when a mill was built on the banks of Oyster Creek, Wolfe City is a small town to the north of Greenville. It flourished with the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1887 (which served as a transport route for local farmers), with two cotton gins and two gristmills constructed by the end of the century.

Today, Wolfe City is a laid-back destination to rent an RV and explore the sights of Hunt County. It’s within easy access of birdwatching and fossil hunting parks while being just a stone’s throw from the family-friendly attractions of nearby Greenville.

Discover Wolfe City

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Wolfe City and drive east to the Cooper Lake State Park, which sprawls around Jim Chapman Lake to the south of Cooper. Visitors are welcome to explore the surrounding trails on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback, with sightings of white-tailed deer, raccoons, and beavers common. Take to the lake waters by boat or go swimming at the sandy beach, with the park also known for its magnificent sunsets.

If you’re a budding paleontologist, pick up your motorhome rental in Wolfe City and head to the Ladonia Fossil Park, which is situated just to the north of Ladonia’s downtown area. It lies on the banks of a river channel where fossils from the Cretaceous and Pleistocene periods have been discovered, with the mostly dry conditions making it ideal for fossil hunting. You’re allowed to collect fossils within the river bed and banks when the river is not flowing, with the possibility of uncovering museum-worthy finds and rare specimens.

Also nearby is the Ladonia Wildlife Management Area, which forms part of the Caddo National Grasslands WMA. It’s a popular birdwatching destination, with eastern meadowlarks, sedge wrens, and scissor-tailed flycatchers all regularly spotted. Farther north lies the Bois d’Arc Creek Unit of the Caddo National Grasslands that’s crisscrossed by several multi-use trails and features two lakes where beavers and otters can be seen.

RV Parks

After picking up your camper rental in Wolfe City, drive south to the Brushy Creek Resort in Royce City, which has around 50 full hook-up sites with both premium concrete pads and standard gravel pads. Take advantage of the complimentary Wi-Fi and cable TV, and while away the days with a fishing rod beside the two catch-and-release ponds.

In nearby Caddo Mills is the Dallas Northeast Campground, which has 85 pull-through sites with full hookups and either 30 or 50 amp service. There’s a large swimming pool and also a children’s playground, as well as a recreational hall and a five-acre lake where you can fish.

Also, just to the south of Greenville is a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

On the eastern edge of the town lies the Wolfe City Reservoir where anglers can try their luck, as well as the Wolfe City Rodeo Arena where events are regularly held.

A short drive south takes you to the county seat of Greenville and the Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum where you can learn about the region’s rich cotton-growing history.
