Wallis is a city in Austin County, in the far southeast portion of the state of Texas. The area was first settled by Europeans in 1830 and received its first post office, Bovine Bend, in 1873. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway was built from Galveston to Brenham sometime after 1880, passing through Wallis on its way. The town was renamed Wallis Station after the railroad's director, J.E. Wallis. A second railroad arrived at Wallis in 1887, the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway, on its way to Houston. Wallis has grown slowly since then, with the occasional reversal, but still maintains its small-town ambiance. The city was a part of a documentary titled The Heart of Texas and was a filming location for the movie Urban Cowboy (the movie's opening scene was shot at a farm on the outskirts of Wallis).

Search for an RV in Austin County, and you are on the road to a vacation that will do the state of Texas proud. There are other communities that are also worth exploring. Hempstead was home to the Confederate Military Post of Hempstead, created in 1861 and located along Clear Creek. Cypress was a rural area prior to 1980 but is now one of Houston's biggest suburbs. Sugar Land was a company town from 1908 to 1959, the year of its incorporation; it began as a large sugar plantation in the Brazos River floodplain before consolidating all of the local plantations and forming the Imperial Sugar Company. Wharton is named after two brothers who were important leaders in Texas' struggle for independence. Columbus has a Santa Claus museum that was developed from a collection by Mary Elizabeth Hopkins. Your Wallis Texas campervan rental is your invitation to enjoy all that this area has to offer.

The Great Outdoors

Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge is a coastal prairie habitat with wooded riparian corridors and natural wetlands (commonly called “prairie potholes”). Coastal prairies once dominated the Texas landscape but are now exceedingly rare. The wetlands are a feeding and resting area for birds, amphibians, and reptiles; the forests consist of live oaks, sycamore, and cypress tree stands, providing shelter for multiple mammal, bird, and fish species. Visitors can hike the park's trails and enjoy the nature and wildlife viewing. Return to your Wallis RV rental afterward for a hot lunch and coffee, and enjoy the best of both worlds.

Bear Creek Pioneers Park is a cultivated urban park with numerous activities to enjoy, such as fishing, hiking and horseback riding, and much more. There are recreational fields for playing baseball and soccer, tennis courts, and a playground for younger children. There are gazebos and pavilions, a community center, and restrooms.

Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge is a multi-use preserve providing shelter for migrating bird species and resident mammals, and recreational use for the general public. The area is an expanse of salt and freshwater marshes, woody thickets, and coastal prairies that house a diverse wildlife population. The refuge also provides opportunities for visitors to fish and hunt, hike, and enjoy environmental education programs sponsored by the park management.

The bread and donuts are highly recommended. There is a bird sanctuary that cares for injured birds of prey such as raptors, and there are also working farms. One of the farms has a selection of mazes that families and young kids can enjoy. Those who need to get out of the sun can head for the shopping malls or an antique store located in an old house. Don't forget that RV vacations were made for cruising the highways; it's an experience you won't want to miss, seated high above the surrounding traffic in your Wallis motorhome rental.

Enjoying good food outdoors under a warm afternoon sun or evening star-filled sky is what vacations are all about.
