Tom Bean is a charter city in Grayson County, Texas, initiated in the 1880s. It is named after its founder who donated land for a branch railroad running from Sherman to the city of Commerce. Following his death in 1887, the post office in Whitemound moved to Tom Bean city due to the railroad's bypassing Whitemound. Many of the Whitemound settlers moved to the new city, and the founder's estate began selling city plots in the 1890s. A school was built, numerous churches opened, and the city was granted its charter in 1897. The city continued to boom in the early 20th century, but a decrease in cotton sales and the introduction of automobiles resulted in many Tom Bean citizens moving to larger cities. Today, Tom Bean's proximity to Sherman contributes to its survival even though its time as a boom town has ended.

Book an RV in Grayson County, and you will be ready to explore the history and landscape of this area. Other towns and cities are worth spending some time in, too. Sherman had an electric interurban rail service to Denison, the first of many interurban train services in Texas, but these had been discontinued by 1948. Bells was named after the tradition of ringing church bells to announce the arrival of a railroad. Leonard is the home of JB Stokes, a member of the 506 Airborne, Easy Company; Stokes and his platoon were featured in the TV series Band of Brothers. McKinney was the principal commercial center for Grayson County for 125 years and a commuter center for residents who worked nearby in the mid-1980s. Farmersville is the home of many celebrities, including WWII hero Audie Murphy, two-time Olympic gold medal winner Loren Murchison, and jazz guitarist Herb Ellis; there is a plaque dedicated to Audie Murphy in the town square where he gave a speech after returning home from the war. Your Tom Bean travel trailer rental is your introduction to this historic area and its culture.
