Thornton was first established as a settlement in 1868 and again in 1871 by the Houston and Texas Central Railroad when it came to the community, a post office in the city quickly followed.
The surrounding area is typically flat prairie and farmland. The nearest large city is Waco directly to the west while directly north is the small city of Corsicana. There are five boat ramps around the shoreline for easy access, and water sports are very popular. The lake also attracts a wide range of birds and wildlife for you to try to spot. Within the heart of the forest is the 45-acre Ratcliff Lake, which has a large campground, an amphitheater, a swimming area, and hiking trails. The forest contains many hiking routes, such as the Four C National Recreation Trail which covers 20 miles, starting at Ratcliff Lake.
Less than fifteen miles west, when you pick up your RV rental in Thornton, is the Running Branch Campground and Marina. The campground is right on the edge of Lake Limestone, giving easy access to the water for fishing and water sports. Head north to the town of Groesbeck to find more facilities, and you’ll also come across the Confederate Reunion Grounds State Historic Site, just beyond Fort Parker Lake. The site covers 76 acres of historic structures and has been built to remember the civil-war reunion movement. The area where the site stands was used Confederate Civil War veterans to reunite between 1889 and 1946, and it’s still being used today. Many events are organized at the grounds, including re-enactments, dismounted cavalry drill displays, and civil war weapon demonstrations.
In the same area is the Limestone County Historical Museum that attempts through exhibits and displays to record the history of the county. The area is known to have been first settled at Fort Parker in around 1833. The museum is a fascinating insight into life during that period.
