Just a short drive west of Texas' capital city of Austin is the small Hill Country town of Round Mountain, just waiting to be discovered. Nestled among the many rock hills and grasslands of the Texas Hill Country, this little hidden gem is within easy reach of some of the region’s most naturally beautiful landscapes. Round Mountain was founded in 1857 and began as a stagecoach stop for those traveling out west. Over time, as more people heard about Round Mountain, the town became a resort destination for those looking to escape from the bustle of the city.

When you book an RV in Blanco County, you open up all of the Texas Hill Country for you to explore. You will get to see magnificent limestone formations, clear rivers, and grasslands teeming with wildflowers.

The Great Outdoors

Just a short drive south of Round Mountain is Pedernales Falls State Park in Johnson City. This is a particularly pleasant spot to spend time at if you rent an RV in the Lone Star State during those hot summer months. You can go for a swim in jade-colored Pedernales River, go tubing or kayaking, or instead go for a hike along the riverbanks and find your way to the Pedernales Falls. You can also learn a little about the local biodiversity at the on-site bird and butterfly garden.

A short drive northeast of town is the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge in Marble Falls. If you’re looking to explore some of that rugged Texas grassland, then look no further than Balcones Canyonlands. You can head out on the seven miles of trails that wind through the park and keep an eye out for all sorts of Texas wildlife, such as armadillo, deer, and maybe even a coyote. The refuge was founded to protect migratory birds, specifically the black-capped vireo and the golden-cheeked warbler. Balcones is considered one of the best birding destinations in Texas.

Nestled in a bend of the Colorado River is the Pace Bend Park near Spicewood. Head here with the Round Mountain motorhome rental, and you can explore the limestone cliffs along the river or enjoy soaking up the Texas sun along the beaches. If you’d like a hands-on water experience, you can head down the river in a kayak or canoe, or even go for a swim yourself.

RV Parks

When you rent an RV in Round Mountain, you may want to find a campsite or two where you can park your RV at night. Luckily enough, there are a few places around town worth considering.

Just to the east of town, on the way to Austin, is the Sunset RV Resort. At Sunset, guests can expect electric hookups, restroom and shower facilities, and laundry facilities. Guests also have Wi-Fi access.

Just southwest of town is the Fredericksburg RV Park. At Fredericksburg, guests will have access to full hookups, restroom and shower facilities, and laundry facilities. Guests will also have access to a multi-purpose clubhouse.

Explore the City

When you rent an RV in Round Mountain, be sure to set aside some time to explore the local community. The small Hill Country towns of Texas are filled with so much history and personality that you are going to want to make sure you have plenty of time to fully immerse yourself in the local area to experience all of the little hidden gems.

If you might have been looking for wildlife a bit bigger on your hikes around the Hill Country, then spend part of your day at The Preserve, where you can see elephants. You can get up close and personal to these gentle giants as you get to feed them, pet them, and even bathe them. Two of the elephants have even starred in some Hollywood movies.

If you’re looking for a quick way to beat the heat, but don’t want to travel far, then head down the road to the Hamilton Pool. This natural spring is a well-kept secret. You can enjoy the blue waters of this refreshingly cold pool as you soak and let your worries float away.

If there’s one thing the Austin area is known for, it’s the vast array of craft distilleries and breweries. You’ll be able to explore just about any local brewery and distillery, learn about the processes that go into making the adult beverages, and maybe even get to taste some of them yourself.

The Hill Country is known for a lot of things, including kolaches. Brought over by the Czech immigrants and adopted by the residents already in the area, kolaches are basically dinner rolls stuffed with tantalizing combinations of meats and cheeses that make the perfect breakfast or an easy snack. There are even fruit versions for those looking for something a little sweeter.

When you eventually find yourself needing to restock and refuel your RV rental in Round Mountain, head north along US-281. You will find plenty of options just north of town.
