Nixon is a city in Gonzales County, Texas. It was originally founded as Nixonville in 1906 with the arrival of the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway. With the railroad came progress and growth, and the city gained a school, a church, business properties, and a telephone system in the 1910s and 1920s. Since the 1950s, Nixon's economy has relied heavily on agriculture and later on oil. Today, Nixon's citizens are invested and active in the town's affairs, working with their city council to improve the community and their lives.

RV rentals in Gonzales County are plentiful, and it should be easy to find the one best suited for your travels. There are some towns that you should check out while you are here. Luling was named after a New York City banker who financed the railroad construction and the purchase of land that later became the city of Luling. Cuero is nicknamed “The Turkey Capital of the World” and its high school mascot is named “The Gobbler.” Gillett was originally called “Riddleville,” after the community applied for a post office as “Riedelville” and the postal system misspelled the name. Karnes City was mentioned in the TV series Death Valley Days in 1969, in a fictionalized account of a real event in the city's history. Floresville has a number of notable citizens, including civil rights activist Vicente T. Ximenes. Your Nixon travel trailer rental is your ticket to the culture and history of Gonzales County and the state of Texas.

Discover Nixon

The Great Outdoors

Palmetto State Park is a nature preserve resembling the tropics more than typical climate found in the state of Texas. It is home to dwarf palmetto plants (hence the park name) which surround the park's swamp habitat. There are more than 240 bird species and a wide variety of plant life, making the park a birder's paradise. Visitors may also spot raccoons, armadillos, and white-tailed deer on the premises. Guests can swim, canoe, or fish in the San Marcos River or in Oxbow Lake. You can hike or bike the trails, or relax in the picnic pavilion, which has a kitchen with air conditioning.

Guadalupe River State Park is most popular for swimming in the river, but there are trails where visitors can hike, bike, or go horseback riding. Visitors have access to a discovery center, which has exhibits and opportunities to view nature through a microscope or binoculars. There is a gift shop where you can purchase food, drink, and souvenirs. Canoeing on the river is allowed. Keep your Nixon camper rental nearby so you can shower and refresh between or after activities, and access all the comforts of home.

RV Parks

There are numerous RV parks and campgrounds near Nixon; some of them are slightly farther out, and some may have long-term residents. Your Nixon RV trailer rental is all you need to make this iconic vacation a reality.

Guadalupe River State Park has two RV camping areas, Turkey Sink and Cedar Sage. These rustic campsites have electricity and water hookups, fire rings, and picnic tables. There are restrooms within the park; some of the sites are for tent camping, some for RV camping.

River Shade RV Park is a rustic RV campground renting sites by the day, week, or month. Most sites are pull-through, some (the ones next to the river) are back-in; all sites have full hookups. The camp is situated in a grove of pecan trees, and there are restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities on site.

Exploring The City

There is plenty to see and do in the area surrounding Nixon. There are parks and museums; one of the museums is a former jail and gallows. The atmosphere is obviously on the grim side, but the facility is well cared for and family-friendly. There are saloons and distilleries, and mercantile shops selling all manners of antique items. One historical house provides a good visual experience of what Texas life was like in the past and is the oldest standing building in its community. Remember to take your Nixon motorhome rental for a spin on the local highways while you have the chance; it's one of those things that makes RV vacations unique and something not to be missed.

When it's time to replenish all those calories you've burnt (don't forget you're on vacation), Nixon and the outlying area have a good selection to choose from. One locally owned barbecue joint serves ribs and chicken along with other items. They are as well known for their sides dishes as for the main courses; there is a small seating area, and takeout can be accommodated. A local pizzeria provides a salad bar along with their a la carte items; appetizers include chicken wings. Don't be embarrassed if you can't finish your meal. Portions tend to be large; this is the excuse you needed (not that you needed one) to take your leftover meal home to your Nixon luxury RV rental for a late-night snack. Vacations were meant for being spontaneous and carefree, and there is nothing more leisurely than nibbling on leftovers in a comfortable lawn chair under a star-filled sky.
