Created in 1989 following the merger of two distinct settlements, Little River-Academy, Texas is a small city that clusters to the north of the Little River. It was first settled back in 1836 when Fort Griffin was built near the river, with a community soon developing to defend itself from Native American attacks.

Little River-Academy’s proximity to the Bell County seat of Temple and the historic town of Belton make it a popular place to rent an RV, with a range of recreational lakes and reserves on its doorstep. It’s also within proximity to the bright lights of Austin and the city of Waco.

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your camper rental in Little River-Academy and drive west to Stillhouse Hollow Lake, a human-made reservoir that’s dotted with leafy parks. There are rocky beaches and sandy bluffs from where you can take a dip in the waters or try your luck at luring largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and channel catfish while fishing. The southern shores of the lake are home to wetlands that were created to attract birds and wildlife while the sprawling recreational area of Dana Peak Park hugs the northern shores.

Or, spend a day at the Fort Hood Recreation Area, which lies along the southwestern shores of Belton Lake. It’s a popular fishing destination, with bass, sunfish, crappie, and bluegills all well stocked, as well as offering a range of watercraft rentals that include kayaks, wakeboards, and tubes. There’s a good variety of mountain biking and horseback riding trails to suit all levels of riders, not to mention a 53-foot outdoor climbing wall and paintball arena.

If you want to stretch your legs, the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge is the place to head, with numerous hiking trails winding between its steep canyons, prairies, and woodland forests. It was established to conserve vital habitat of the golden-cheeked warbler and the black-capped vireo, which can occasionally be spotted from the Shin Oak Observation Deck. For spectacular views of the Texas Hill Country, embark on the 2.2-mile-long Rimrock Trail that takes you to the top of the Edwards Plateau.
