Between Dallas and the Davy Crockett National Forest on State Highways 274 and 175, lies a small town with a rich history. Kemp, TX, was given its name when the first post office opened in the town in 1851 and named after the postmaster John Marr Watkins' wife, Malvina Kemp Watkins.
The land surrounding Kemp is incredibly flat, which led to the town being chosen as the terminus stop for a new railroad back in the late 1800s. It was this railway line that prompted many people to move to the town, and by the early 1900s, Kemp was thriving, with almost 100 businesses calling it home. As the years have gone on, the population has stayed stable, but nowadays it’s more residential than commercial, making for a very peaceful stopover on your vacation as most of the town's residents commute to nearby Kaufman or Athens.
In the heart of Texas, Kemp is perfectly located for visiting not only the city sights but the great outdoors too. Only a stone’s throw from the banks of the Cedar Creek Reservoir makes this massive lake a popular weekend spot with local Texans and visitors alike.
Those hoping to enjoy some hiking, bird watching, and picnicking with an RV rental from Kemp can head south to the Davy Crockett National Forest. An incomparable sight to see, the forest covers 160,000 acres. With its gently rolling hills and flat plains, it makes for a great spot for the whole family to hike at their own pace. And once you’ve worked up an appetite, how about setting up on one of the lakeside picnic benches of the 45-acre Ratcliff Lake?!
If you’re looking for something that gets the adrenaline pumping, head a little farther to the Sabine National Forest where you’ll not only find hiking trails galore, but off-road driving adventures, horseback riding, and mountain biking trails.
There aren't many options for parking your Kemp RV rental right in town but there are a few nearby spots to consider. The nearest of which is probably Lone Star RV Park, a short drive south of Kemp. The park offers nightly, weekly, and monthly rates and amenities include laundry and restroom facilities, and Wi-Fi access. The park is pet-friendly and the campsites are spacious.
Waterfront Lodge is on the banks of the Cedar Creek Reservoir and offers RV campsites and other lodging options. Hookups for water and electricity are available and guests have access to fishing piers, grills, and picnic tables on site.
Another option is the Canton KOA, about 30 miles from Kemp, where amenities include electrical hookups and outdoor patio spaces available at some sites. The more entertaining features of the property include the catch-and-release fishing pond, multiple escape rooms for family puzzle fun, a ropes course, paddle boats, and in-house restaurant and pub.
You could also consider spending a night or two with Kemp camper rental at the Walmart Supercenter in Kaufman, a 15-minute drive from Kemp. The store may allow overnight parking, though it’s best to check in with a manager prior to your stay.
Be sure to start your trip with the RV rental in Kemp, Texas by stocking up on goodies at the local bakery and market, filled to the brim with tasty treats. You can stop by for a coffee and find some of the hidden gems that visitors rarely get to see.
For the history and western buff, make your way over to the Kemp Calaboose with your travel trailer rental from Kemp, the local jailhouse where none other than Bonnie from the infamous duo of Bonnie and Clyde was held here for stealing a mule.
The nearby golf course is a great place to spend a day, with private golf instruction and the option of nine or 18-hole tee times. And if golfing isn’t your cup of tea, you can hang out at the bar and grill.
If you’re looking for somewhere to eat out with the family, head to the Mexican restaurant in town and finish off your meal with a nice evening stroll around the quiet streets of Kemp. And don’t worry about filling up the gas tank before leaving town, as there are countless gas stations to be found around Kemp and the neighboring towns.
