Garwood is a small community in Colorado County, Texas, located on State Highway 71. The city was platted in July of 1901 and was named after a lawyer in nearby Bastrop, Hiram Morgan Garwood. A store owner, Ed Frnka, moved his store (building and all) to Garwood, as did a number of homeowners. The Frnka family has resided in Garwood from the very beginning and is considered the de facto town historians. Visitors coming to Garwood would be fooled by the town's highway presence and should watch for a small, easily missed sign stating “Uptown Garfield” (pointing everyone in the right direction).

Search for an RV in Colorado County, and you can choose from a wide selection of RVs in a variety of sizes and models. There are other towns you should visit at least once while in the area. Columbus has a motto, “City of Live Oaks and Live Folks,” and has a Santa Claus Museum. Sealy was created when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad purchased land from San Felipe to build it in 1879 (the town was named after a company shareholder). Rosenberg is named after the first president of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway, Henry Rosenberg. El Campo is or was home to some notable people, such as Joey Hunt of the NFL Seattle Seahawks, astronaut Eugene Cernan, and radio minister Charles Swindoll. Hallettsville is the location of the Texas Championship Domino Hall of Fame; the city hosts an annual domino tournament in addition to its other social events. Your Garwood travel trailer rental is how your RV vacation will start; where it goes from there is entirely up to you.

The Great Outdoors

Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge is home to the Attwater's prairie chicken, which was added to the endangered species list in 1967. The refuge consists of coastal prairie (which the chickens require), wooded corridors of live oak, sycamore, and cypress trees, and native wetlands called “prairie potholes” for their round shape. The wetlands occur randomly within the coastal prairie habitat. Visitors can take a self-guided auto tour on the designated auto route only; hiking is allowed along the route, but guests should be cautious of snakes, alligators, and red ants. The park is open from sunrise to sunset and the road is undeveloped; a suitable rental car might be worthwhile.

Lake Texana Park and Campground is part of the Brackenridge Recreation Complex and offers visitors the opportunity to fish for catfish, bass, and crappie. Visitors can hike or go mountain biking on a variety of trails. Guests can watch for deer and bird species, but should also watch out for snakes and alligators. There are playgrounds and restrooms/comfort stations. RV camping is allowed; some sites have full hookups, others partial hookups.

Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge is strategically located on the Texas Gulf Coast and has an incredible diversity of plant and wildlife as a result. The park consists of fresh and saltwater estuaries, bay waters, and a blend of soils; these and other factors create a supportive environment for the wildlife. Visitors can enjoy hiking, bird and animal watching, fishing, and waterfowl hunting. Keep your Garwood RV trailer rental nearby and you can sit in the lap of luxury between or after your outdoor activities.

RV Parks

There are numerous RV parks and campgrounds not far from Garwood, and some of them may have long-term guests. Your Garwood motorhome rental is suited to the Texas outdoors and is your guarantee of a pleasant and relaxing vacation.

Lamco RV Park is an open RV campground with cement pads, grass areas, and spacious sites with plenty of room for pullouts. The park has restrooms and showers, security gates, and an outside covered seating area. There are laundry facilities, exercise equipment, and a recreation area with large screen TVs. Individual sites have electrical outlets; some sites have pull-through access, others are back-in.

Whispering Oaks RV Park is a semi-developed RV campground that rents by the day, week, or month. The park has restrooms and a laundry room, an on-site convenience store and RV repair service, should you need assistance. There is a playground, a fenced-in pet area, and a horseshoe pit. Individual sites have picnic tables, fire rings, and Wi-Fi. Some sites have pull-through access and mature oak trees providing shade; all sites have electrical outlets. The park has a rustic cabin which can be rented.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to see and do in Garwood and the surrounding area, starting with an abundance of urban parks. Some are fully developed, others more natural. Young kids will enjoy a nature and science center with live animals and animal exhibits. The park has programs and events, a playground, and hiking trails. There is an amusement park where kids of all ages can get their adrenaline pumping, a public library where families can chill, and wineries for the adults, plus much more. Remember to take your Garwood RV rental for a spin on the highway before you return the keys; this is what RV vacations are all about.

When it is time to recharge, there are some locally run cafes and restaurants to choose from. One cafe serves up Mexican food, seafood, and hamburgers. Another cafe has outdoor seating and some interesting menu items. Diners who land here should try the stuffed jalapeño peppers (stuffed with crab meat) or the gator bites appetizers. Those who would like to relax in their Garwood luxury RV rental can always get takeout; vacations are made for eating your dinner outdoors in a lawn chair under a starry sky.
