Garden City is a sparsely populated town in western Texas and is a fun vacation destination for a variety of reasons. Garden City dates back to the year 1886 when a local general store was established to service the ranchers in the area. The store was owned by a man with the surname Gardner, but a clerical error resulted in the misspelling of the name, making the town name Garden City. When New California and Garden City were vying to become the seat for Glasscock County, a unique compromise was made. New California was chosen for its location despite not having many structures, and Garden City’s buildings were moved to New California to combine the two towns.

Despite being a part of the West Texas oil boom and prospering economically, Garden City never really grew, maintaining its small population and small-town atmosphere. When you book an RV in Garden City, you’ll have the pleasure of spending your days in a peaceful, laidback village surrounded by mesmerizing desert landscapes. Midland and Odessa are two of the main cities in an area otherwise devoid of major population centers, though you could opt to drive to faraway Texas cities like San Antonio or Dallas when you rent an RV in Garden City.

The Great Outdoors

There are tons of ways to make good use of your Garden City motorhome rental when you visit West Texas. Big Spring State Park is one of many possibilities that you can explore, with lots of interesting sights to capture your interest. There are hiking and mountain biking trails weaving throughout the park and an interpretive center home to Native American artifacts and fossils from ancient creatures. The Big Spring Film Society frequently has movie screenings on top of the mountain in the small park, a site that is also great for stargazing.

San Angelo State Park is a large park by the city of San Angelo to the east. This state park is full of archaeological sites left behind by ancient natives, dating back to 18,000 years ago in some areas. There are hiking, biking, and equestrian trails that you can make good use of, along with cabins for rent, boat ramps on the lake, swimming areas, and campsites where you can park your Garden City campervan rental overnight. Monahans Sandhills State Park to the west of Garden City is full of mesmerizing dunes that make visitors feel as though they have been dropped into the Sahara Desert of Africa. This unique environment has lots of cool activities utilizing its seemingly infinite amounts of sand, like sandboarding down the dunes, sand football, and sand sledding.

Two of the best national parks in the region can be reached with several hours of driving when you feel like taking your Garden City camper rental for a road trip through West Texas. Guadalupe Mountains National Park contains the highest peak in Texas, Guadalupe Peak, with stunning views of the landscapes below. You can hike this southern giant or camp out in the salt flats, pine forests, rolling hills, or canyon lands of the park. Carlsbad Caverns National Park is just north of the Texas-New Mexico state line, contained in the very same mountain range as Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Here you can explore the dark depths of one of the world’s most famous and largest cave systems.

RV Park

If you need a place to camp overnight, there are a few stellar options close to Garden City. Garden RV Park is perhaps the closest to downtown Garden City, minutes away from restaurants, gas stations, and shops in the heart of town. You can walk around the city or enjoy some peace and quiet in the park, which is equipped with spacious campsites, laundry facilities, and high-speed internet.

West Texas Friendly RV Park has two locations over near Big Spring, both with on-site managers, pull-through campsites, laundry facilities, internet, and lots of other amenities.

City Attractions

While Garden City makes a great home base when you rent an RV, it doesn't have a lot of attractions. There are a few shops and diners where you can grab a quick bite to eat, but not many noteworthy attractions to speak of besides the small county courthouse. Over in Midland, you can find some different ways to spend your time though. The Petroleum Museum pays homage to the vital role that oil has played in the region. The museum tells the story of this natural substance found deep in the Earth’s crust, transformed from organic matter under high pressure for hundreds of millions of years. There is a wealth of information about the area's first drillers and oil industry workers who worked in dangerous circumstances to make a living, as well as amazing cars, aircraft, and machinery that use petroleum products to run properly.

The Museum of the Southwest in the old Turner Mansion is both a historical landmark and an informative museum covering a wide range of topics like outer space, art, history, and nature. The planetarium is a wonderful place to learn about the cosmos while watching engaging light shows, and there is a children's area of the museum where youngsters can learn about the natural world too.

The house of former presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush is located in Midland too, showing the humble beginnings of the Bush family who came to dominate politics in the latter half of the 20th century. This charming small house is where the 43rd president grew up. You can tour this small house and see what the president’s life must have been like as a child.
