Dilley is a city in Frio County, Texas, south of the county seat in Pearsall. It is a rustic town with lots of green space and open sky. Dilley was originally called Darlington and sometimes called Ford due to the proximity of a Frio River Crossing (Rocky Ford). The settlement was located near the International-Great Northern Railroad, which built its first railroad depot, siding, and stock pen nearby. A post office was set up at Darlington in 1885, followed by a telegraph line in 1890; the town's name was officially changed to Dilley in 1896. By 1965, the town had a health clinic and rest home, a peanut processing plant, and a large watermelon statue (it became one of the largest communities in the county and a shipping hub for watermelon, peanuts, and cattle by 1967).

Pleasanton has a cowboy statue in front of its city hall in honor of its cowboy heritage. Tilden was called “Dog Town” after the end of the Civil War due to its reputation for lawlessness; it is also home to Boot Hill Cemetery, one of only two graveyards of its kind in the southwest U.S. Cotulla was designated a Texas Main Street community in 2006, and was granted a historical marker in 2013 for its downtown area; the marker was granted by the Texas Historical Commission, the United States Department of the Interior, and the National Register of Historic Places. Carrizo Springs was named for the nearby artesian springs and the cane grass that grew around them; these artesian wells are renowned for their pure water which is exported for use as holy water. Your Dilley travel trailer rental is your invitation to explore this area.
Chaparral Wildlife Management Area was part of a historic south Texas cattle ranch that was purchased in 1969 with the intention of creating a research and public model area of the Rio Grande plains. It is open annually from early April until late August for public hunts, educational field trips, and nature tours. Hunters can choose from white-tailed deer, feral hogs, coyotes, and others with an appropriate license. There are numerous trails for hiking, one of which is wheelchair accessible. Biking and camping in the park are also allowed.
Hill Country State Natural Area was acquired by the state through purchase and gift from private owners in 1976; it was opened to the public in 1984. It is divided by West Verde Creek and seasonal flowing springs and consists of rocky hills and limestone cliffs, canyons and grasslands, and oak mottes. It is an ideal location for viewing the flowers and plant life, mammals, and other resident wildlife. Guests have access to hiking and backpacking, mountain bike and horseback riding, and primitive camping. There is a guest lodge that can be rented, or you can park your Dilley camper rental nearby and retire to comfort when your activities are finished for the day.
Government Canyon State Natural Area is owned by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and other minority partners; the group began purchasing the land in 1993 and opened the park in 2005. The area's water supply attracted dinosaurs 110 million years ago and more recently, Native American tribes who passed through the canyon and camped at the springs. The area supported farming and ranching until being reclaimed; visitors can enjoy picnicking, geocaching and programs, and guided hikes offered by park staff. Be sure to be on the lookout for the ancient midden and dinosaur tracks (which can be located from a sign).
