Surrounded by protected forests and fishing reservoirs, Chester is a small town in the far east of Texas. It was founded in 1793 during the Chesterean Siege, as a party of farmers defended the area from attack by a local Comanche tribe. In the following years, some of the surviving farmers established what became one of the largest tobacco and sugar plantations in Texas.

Today, Chester is a laid-back place to rent an RV while exploring the vast and scenic national forests nearby. It’s within easy access of historic towns and family-friendly RV parks while being less than two hours’ drive from the bustling heart of Houston.

The Great Outdoors

Book a motorhome rental in Chester, TX and make the short drive north to the Davy Crockett National Forest, which is named after the American folk hero and pioneer. It encompasses more than 160,000 acres and numerous recreation areas where you can go hiking, swimming, and fishing. Cast a line from the fishing pier on Ratcliff Lake to see what’s biting and stroll along the short nature trail or challenge yourself along the 20-mile-long Four C National Recreation Trail that accesses the Neches Bluff Overlook.

To the northeast of Chester sprawls the Sam Rayburn Reservoir, which is the largest lake that lies entirely within the state of Texas. It’s named in honor of the former speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Sam Rayburn, and was established in the 1950s for the conservation of water and hydroelectricity generation. The Sam Rayburn Reservoir is a popular fishing hub and has a reputation for being the best bass lake in the United States while also being well-stocked with bluegill and channel catfish.

Or, drive southwest to the Sam Houston National Forest, which sprawls across more than 160,000 acres on the edge of Lake Livingston. It’s traversed by the longest continuously marked footpath in Texas - the Lone Star Hiking Trail - that extends from Richards all the way to Cleveland. Aside from hiking, you can rent canoes and paddle boats at Double Lake to explore its picturesque waters or go fishing on the shores of Lake Conroe and Lake Livingston.
