Established back in 1838, Chatfield is a small community amidst the lake-dotted landscapes of Navarro County. It was founded as a trading post by Champion Chatfield on the San Antonio and Shreveport Trail, with the community named after this early pioneer.

Chatfield flourished with the cotton growing industry and peaked in population in the 1890s. By the end of the Great Depression, the population had declined to 300, with the community now comprised of just a handful of houses and a whitewashed church. It’s a charming destination to rent an RV and enjoy the laid-back pace of life, with plenty of fishing and birdwatching sites just a stone’s throw away.

Discover Chatfield

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Chatfield and drive east to the Cedar Creek Reservoir, which encompasses three islands that provide important habitat for aquatic birds. In addition to being a popular birdwatching destination, the lake is well stocked with catfish, white bass, and crappie. The southern grass beds are a popular spot for anglers to lure largemouth bass while blue catfish can be found throughout the reservoir.

If you’re after more birdlife, head south to the Richland Creek Wildlife Management Area, which encompasses more than 13,000 acres of wetlands and swamps on the edge of the Richland Chambers Reservoir. Climb the observation tower to spot waders, ospreys, and bald eagles while keeping an eye out for white-tailed deer, beavers, and minks. Or, you can try your luck at catching Coppernose bluegill, Florida bass, and blue catfish in the adjacent waters or just soak up the reservoir views from the waterfront restaurant.

Want to stretch your legs? Rent a motorhome in Chatfield and drive west to pretty Bluebonnet Park in Ennis where walking trails wind between its fields of wildflowers. There are picnic shelters and a children’s playground where young visitors can let off some steam, as well as baseball/softball fields and jogging paths. The park lies adjacent to Lake Bardwell, which has a number of fishing spots and is well stocked with catfish, hybrid stripers, and largemouth bass.

RV Parks

Pick up your camper rental in Chatfield and drive south to the American RV Park, which offers large pull-through sites on the edge of Corsicana. There's complimentary Wi-Fi and also a dog park where your four-legged friends can run around, as well as a large clubhouse for social occasions.

Drive in the other direction and you’ll arrive at the Lonestar RV Park in Seven Points. It offers a quiet atmosphere amidst seven acres of hardwood trees and grasslands and is dog-friendly. Take advantage of the Wi-Fi service or catch up on your washing at the laundry facility.

Chatfield’s also within easy access of the Sunset Cove Marina - Campground & RV Resort on the shores of Richland Chambers Lake. There are just over 20 full hookup sites to select from and a boat ramp for launching watercraft, as well as an on-site convenience store and rental hub that’s stocked with kayaks and stand-up paddle boards.

Chatfield is home to an office of the United States Postal Service, but if you’re looking to stock up on groceries, make the 15-minute drive south to Corsicana. There are various supermarkets, cafes, and restaurants for dining out, as well as gas stations if you need to fill up. Corsicana is also home to a Walmart where you may be able to set up camp for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Chatfield and stroll down the main street, stopping to admire its historic buildings and the whitewashed Chatfield Methodist Church. A marker at the site of the Chatfield Baptist Church details its associations with slavery and the establishment of a Baptist community following emancipation. In addition to its post office, Chatfield is home to three cemeteries that offer a fascinating insight into the town’s past.

If you want a change of pace, make the short drive south to the bustling county seat of Corsicana, which is considered the “birthplace” of the Texas oil industry. It centers around Petroleum Park where oil was first discovered in 1894, with a gazebo, historic derrick, and a 1923 wooden jail marking the site today. A short stroll north takes you to the Old City Jail, a striking brick landmark that dates to 1908 and served as the local prison until 1974.

Continue walking towards Jester Park and you’ll arrive at the Pioneer Village Historical Museum where a number of mid-19th-century buildings cluster around a watering hole. Admire the old general store, trading post, and blacksmith shop that have been reconstructed using materials sourced from settlements throughout the county, then browse the antique furnishings of the Pioneer Village Office and Archives Building. The site is also home to the Lefty Frizzell Museum, which celebrates the life and music of this influential local honky-tonk singer.

Whether you’re visiting Navarro County for its fishing reservoirs or historic towns, book an RV in Chatfield and get started on your next adventure.
