When the Velasco Terminal Railway laid down tracks and built a depot in the heart of Brazoria County in 1890, a small settlement grew around the depot. In those days, it was traditional to name towns after railroad agents or prominent employees of a railroad company. A different town had already used the general manager’s name (which is unknown), and so the residents opted to name the town after his wife. Thus Angleton was born.
A few short years later, the county had to choose its county seat, at which the administrators would handle the local government and judicial matters. The choices were narrowed down to Angleton and a nearby town, Brazoria. A heated feud developed, and it was so contentious that Angleton’s citizens had to move county records and paperwork nightly for fear that Brazoria would steal or destroy them. Ultimately Angleton was chosen, and they officially became the county seat in 1896.
Today, Angleton is home to Texas’ largest county fair, which is hosted annually in Octobers. The town has maintained a friendly rivalry with Brazoria over the years, though these days it’s all in good fun. It’s the sort of place where everyone knows everyone. Roseate spoonbills, which were once endangered, can be spotted in this park. There are several miles of trails and boardwalks cutting through and over parts of the park. Heads up: because alligators are common, hikers should not stray off trail.
Sister parks, Justin Hurst Wildlife Management Area and San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge, are just a few miles to the west. Similarly to Brazoria NWF, both parks virtually teem with wildlife, both avian and aquatic. Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtles are known to nest (lay eggs) in San Bernard NWF, and the dunes are home to several exotic birds like great blue herons, roseate spoonbills, wood storks, reddish egrets, and black skimmers. There are several miles of maintained trails and boardwalks, many of which have interpretative signs. Bank-side and small-craft fishing are permitted at Cedar Lakes, which is a shallow, marshy area just barely past the first row of beach dunes. There are several crabbing prohibitions in both parks; check with the management beforehand. Although camping is not allowed at these parks, as to preserve the wilderness for the future, there are several private campgrounds within spitting distance that can accommodate an Angleton RV rental.
