In the southeastern portion of South Dakota, you can book an RV in Vermillion and be on your way to having a splendid vacation in a stunning location. The name Vermillion comes from the Lakota native name for the city that they inhabited long before the settlers arrived. They called it Waséoyuze, meaning “where the Vermillion is obtained,” due to its unbelievable sienna bluffs and red-tinted rivers.

Vermillion was first discovered by fur traders in the 19th century and chosen as the site for a new town. Over half the town washed away in a great flood in 1881, so most of the town was rebuilt after that fateful event.

Vermillion is now a peaceful college town in the tri-state area, where Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska all meet. The small town is found between Sioux City in Iowa and Sioux Falls in South Dakota. A healthy offering of beautiful public parks, museums, and historic buildings make Vermillion an all-around great place to visit while you rent an RV.

The Great Outdoors

Amidst the flat, barren landscapes of South Dakota, there is lots of untold beauty to be found in the state. Down by Sioux City just over the state line in Iowa, Stone State Park gives you a reason to get out and travel in your Vermillion RV rental by owner. Stone State Park has prairie land and dense forests, teeming with wild animals of all sorts. There are turkeys, foxes, coyotes, owls, and over 40 species of butterfly in the sanctuary. On top of that, the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center in the park welcomes newcomers to learn about the park’s nature and walk through its peaceful butterfly gardens.

Spirit Mount State Historic Prairie is north of town, containing a small hill that would not stand out anywhere else aside from a flat prairie. Lewis & Clark mentioned in their diaries that they stood on the hill overlooking the vast expanses of prairie, with views of the Missouri River. The natives, on the other hand, were terrified of this place, as it was said to be haunted by little devils.

Out past Yankton, South Dakota, you can stumble upon a series of parks and recreation areas with campgrounds where you can camp with your Vermillion RV rental. Lewis & Clark Recreation Area is part of the greater Missouri National Recreational River Area designated for public use and outdoor activities. There are miles of beaches along the impounded river, as well as ample space to go fishing and boating. Camping by the river can be a blast if you feel like staying overnight in your Vermillion motorhome rental. Niobrara State Park and Ponca State Park are also part of the Missouri National Recreational River Area, although they are located on the Nebraska side of the state line. There you can find interpretive centers, elegant views of the river, hiking trails, swimming areas, camping sites, and a swimming pool facility too.

RV Parks

Vermillion is an exceptional place to rent an RV, and when seeking a place to park it, your best bet is to head to either Yankton or Sioux Falls and spend the night at one of the deluxe campgrounds in the area. In Yankton, Ryken’s RV Park has everything you need, with full hook-up sites, cable TV, wireless internet, and modern bathroom facilities.

Yankton/Missouri River KOA offers all the basics and more. Scenic views of the Missouri River coupled with spacious campsites, basketball courts, a dog park, and a heated pool make this a place to consider parking the travel trailer rental from Vermillion.

Sioux City North KOA is another park belonging to the well-known KOA campground network. Just north of Sioux City is where you can camp out in this campground, complete with mini golf, bicycle rentals, a swimming pool, and much more.

City Sightseeing

Vermillion is a small town, but its population swells when summer is over, and the university students attending the University of South Dakota pour in. To welcome these students, there are some exciting bars, breweries, eateries, diners, shopping centers, and other entertaining sites to see in the city. The Coyote Twin Theater is an old theater that was purchased by the community to prevent it from closing down. This lovely historic building has been refurbished with state-of-the-art technology to make it a modern-day film-watching experience with old-fashioned style.

The W. H. Over Museum is a unique museum founded in 1883, containing a treasure trove of artifacts and items from the past. You can tour the facility and see Native American weapons, artwork, everyday items, tools, and costumes worn by the settlers, and a diverse mix of many other interesting photographs and informational exhibits.

The National Music Museum is a must-see for any music lovers, recognized as a landmark of American music by the National Music Council. There are over 15,000 instruments on display from all over the world, like antique pianos from France, and drums from the heart of Africa. Most people would not expect to find such a cultural treasure in Vermillion, South Dakota, yet there you can find one of the best music-centric museums on the planet.
