Seneca, South Carolina is a town that is actually the center of its own micropolitan statistical area (MSA). A micropolitan statistical area is a cluster of towns or labor markets that have more than 10,000 people but generally fewer than 50,000. Some of them have around 75,000 people depending on how the borders are defined. Seneca is also considered to be part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson combined area.

Seneca is located in Oconee County, the westernmost county in South Carolina. The town was named for a Cherokee town named Isinugu. The town was subsequently named for the river which is now known as the Seneca River. Oconee County has a hilly landscape that is very conducive to damming and creating man-made lakes. Seneca and the surrounding county have three unique man-made lakes and several waterways.

The city is slightly less than an hour away from Greenville, about 90 minutes from Spartanburg, and a little more than a half-hour away from Anderson. Vacationers who rent an RV in Seneca are well-positioned to visit any of these larger metropolitan areas. While on your outdoor adventure you can also visit rural areas between them to experience small-town life and beautiful nature.

Discover Seneca

The Great Outdoors

When you rent a travel trailer in Seneca, you will have the opportunity to visit different locations. There are three man-made lakes in Oconee County and several other waterways for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and other watersports.

South Cove County Park is an example of one of the many places you can explore. This park is built along Lake Keowee where you could spend an entire afternoon sailing, waterskiing, and swimming. The park also has opportunities for tennis, basketball, and picnicking. So, load up the Seneca camper rental and go have some fun!

Lake Hartwell is the largest lake in the county and was formed by damming the Savannah River, which is a combination of the Seneca and the Tugaloo Rivers. There are several different recreational opportunities for visitors; kayak, canoe, sail, ski, fish, and much more. Fishing, however, might be the most unique experience that Lake Hartwell has to offer. After striped bass were accidentally introduced to Lake Hartwell, it was discovered they could survive in freshwater. Larger fish were then introduced purposefully. Fisherman have been known to catch striped bass over 60 pounds from the lake.

Lake Jocassee is the smallest of the three artificial lakes, but it’s also the deepest. The lake can be as deep as 300 feet at points. The film Deliverance was actually filmed at that location before it was flooded. The site of the filming is now below 130 feet of water. Lake Jocassee is known for having unusually large bass, an abundance of trout, and rare wildflowers.

Because these three lakes are artificial, they are directly linked to rivers. During your visit stop at one of the many different waterfalls along the lengths of the rivers for a photo of the family. There are also hiking opportunities, mountain biking opportunities, and a number of public parks.
