Named after former South Carolina governor John Laurence Manning, Manning serves as the seat of Clarendon County. It was established in 1855, with the first post office opening the following year, although large portions of the town were destroyed during the “Potter’s Raid” of the Civil War.
Today, Manning is a laid-back place to rent an RV while exploring the national forests and wildlife refuges of central South Carolina. It’s just a stone’s throw from the family-friendly campgrounds along the shores of Lake Marion while being an easy day trip from both Columbia and Charleston.
Pick up your campervan rental in Manning and make the short drive west to the Manchester State Forest, which is crisscrossed by hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails. It’s traversed by the 425-mile-long Palmetto Trail that connects to the adjacent Poinsett State Park where you’ll find wildlife-filled swamps, moss-draped trees, and rugged mountainous terrain. Connecting to the north of the Manchester State Forest is the Tuomey Wildlife Management Area while the Congaree National Park lies just to the west.
Manning also makes a good base for visiting the Francis Marion National Forest, which lies around an hour’s drive to the southeast. It encompasses more than 250,000 acres of subtropical coniferous forest and was named after the Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion who was nicknamed the “Swamp Fox.” Aside from hiking along the long-distance Palmetto Trail, the forest is a hub for mountain biking and horseback riding, not to mention off-roading at the Wambaw Cycle Trailhead.
Drive east from Manning, and you’ll arrive at the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge, which is one of the most recent areas to be added to the National Wildlife Refuge System. It sprawls across almost 23,000 acres of coastal wetlands and adjacent uplands that provide vital habitat for a range of migratory and resident bird species. Keep your eyes peeled for endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers that inhabit the longleaf pine forests, together with swallow-tailed kites and bald eagles that nest on Sandy Island.
Book a motorhome rental in Manning and make the short drive south to the Lighthouse Pointe Family RV Park, which offers around 60 RV sites with easy pull-throughs. It’s situated on the shores of Lake Marion, with a boat launch and a children’s playground to keep young guests entertained.
Also on the edge of Lake Marion is the Palmetto Shores RV Resort in Summerton where you’ll find full hookups with 30 or 50 amp service. There are two swimming pools and a lazy river, as well as a children’s playground and an on-site restaurant if you don’t feel like cooking.
Directly south of Manning is the Taw Caw Campground & Marina, which sprawls across 11 acres with over 2,000 feet of waterfront. There are a paved boat ramp and a 150-foot fishing pier, as well as a general store where you can buy groceries, bait, and non-ethanol gasoline.
There's also a Walmart on the western edge of the city where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.
Book an RV rental near Manning and drive along the Swamp Fox Murals Trail through Manning, Summerton, and Turbeville. These beautiful murals detail the life and achievements of General Francis Marion and the region’s Revolutionary War history. Murals include the “Pond Bluff” and “Ox Swamp,” as well as the “Citizen Soldier” and “Marion Militia,” all of which can be admired from your vehicle or up close.
Manning makes a good base for visiting Columbia, which lies just over an hour’s drive to the northwest. Get hands-on with the history, nature, and science exhibits at the South Carolina State Museum or take time to admire the diverse collection at the Columbia Museum of Art, then photograph the Greek Revival-style South Carolina State House. If you’re traveling with kids, don’t miss a visit to the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden that’s home to big-game African wildlife, native animals, and a picturesque botanical garden.
Or, head south to explore the port city of Charleston, which was founded back in 1670. Take a step back in time while riding a horse-drawn carriage through the cobblestoned streets of the French Quarter or stroll through the area while admiring the charming antebellum houses. Charleston is renowned for its fresh produce market where you can sample regional specialties, as well as being home to the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens that detail 19th-century life in the region.
Manning is home to a couple of supermarkets where you can stock up on groceries, as well as a good selection of eateries for dining out. There are also gas stations if you need to fill up your RV rental in Manning.
Whether you’re visiting Clarendon County for its wildlife-filled refuges or historic architecture, book an RV in Manning and start planning your next adventure.
