Named after a Confederate general in the Civil War, Wade Hampton III, Hampton is a charming town in western South Carolina. It was established in 1878 and selected as the county seat due to its location at the midpoint of the Port Royal Railroad between Augusta, Georgia and Port Royal, which helped to spur development in the town.

Despite a small influx of people during World War II when a POW camp was established nearby, Hampton has retained its small-town appeal. It’s the perfect place to rent an RV and base yourself while exploring the wildlife refuges and fishing lakes of the region while being an easy day trip from both Charleston and Savannah.

Discover Hampton

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Hampton and make the short drive west to Lake Warren State Park, a 440-acre protected area around the waters of Lake Warren. It’s a popular boating and fishing destination, with largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and redbreast all for the taking, as well as featuring large tracts of wetlands, floodplain forest, and woodlands. Follow one of the short nature trails while keeping an eye out for birdlife or let the kids run loose on the playground equipment.

Head an hour’s drive south of Hampton, and you’ll arrive at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, a 31,551-acre protected area on the outskirts of the city. It was established as a sanctuary for migratory waterfowl and other birds along the Atlantic Flyway. Stop in at the Visitor Center to learn about the birdlife that frequents the area, then follow one of the walking trails or the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive to explore the refuge’s dikes and pools that remain from pre-Civil War rice plantations.

To the southeast of Hampton lies the Ernest F. Hollings Ace Basin National Wildlife Refuge, which protects the largest undeveloped estuary on the Atlantic Coast. This wildlife-rich wetland features bottomland hardwoods and freshwater marshes where alligators and a huge diversity of birdlife can be spotted. You can access a range of wildlife-viewing observation decks along the network of walking trails and boardwalks or cast a fishing line to see what’s biting in the South Edisto River.

RV Parks

Book a motorhome rental in Hampton and head southeast to The Oaks at Point South RV, which offers 93 sites to select from. There are plenty of picnic tables, barbecue facilities, and a clubhouse, as well as a mini-golf course and nature trails to explore.

Also nearby is the Point South / Yemassee KOA Holiday, a pet-friendly campground that offers full hookups with up to 50-amp service. There’s a large dog play area on the property where your four-legged friends can run free, as well as a swimming pool and picnic pavilion.

Farther north is New Green Acres RV Park where you’ll find just over 100 RV sites nestled in a grove of shady pines. It also welcomes pets, with a spacious dog playground, together with a swimming pool and an on-site laundry facility.

You can also make the 35-minute drive to Walterboro where there’s a Walmart where you may be able to set up camp with the Hampton travel trailer rental for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Hampton and wander through the center of town, which is home to numerous buildings that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. See the Hampton Colored School that was constructed in 1929 and served as the only African American school in Hampton until 1947, as well as the Italianate-style Bank of Hampton and the Art Moderne Palmetto Theatre. Also of note is the elegant Hampton County Courthouse that dates to 1878 and is situated in the very heart of the town.

Hampton makes a good base for visiting the historic city of Walterboro, which was established as a summer retreat for plantation owners in the late 18th century. Admire the Federal-style Walterboro Library Society Building, together with the Old Colleton County Jail, a Gothic Revival landmark designed by local Charleston architects, Edward C. Jones and Francis D. Lee. If you want to learn more, head to the Colleton County Museum, which details the natural, cultural, and agricultural heritage of the region from prehistoric times, as well as hosting regional art exhibitions and the weekly Colleton Farmers Market.

Spend a day exploring the port city of Charleston, which centers around the cobblestoned streets of the French Quarter. Discover the city’s fascinating history dating back to 1670 on a horse-drawn carriage tour or admire the pastel-colored antebellum houses while wandering on foot. Highlights of the city include the Historic Charleston City Market and the picturesque Waterfront Park, as well as historic plantations such as the mid-19th-century Magnolia Plantation that offers guided tours.

Hampton has a couple of supermarkets where you can stock up on groceries, as well as a handful of fast food restaurants and eateries for dining out. There are also gas stations if you want to fill up your campervan rental in Hampton.

Whether you’re visiting Hampton County for its fishing lakes or historic architecture, book an RV in Hampton and start exploring!
