Originally known as the Township of Moreland, the residents planted hundreds of willow trees in an attempt to transform the swamplands. And thus the name, Willow Grove was born sometime in late 1700s. The town was also the site of one of the first amusement parks in United States, established in 1896. The amusement park was eventually torn down in late 70s, and a mall, which was one of the first of its kind in USA, built in its place.

The closest large town is Philadelphia, 14 miles to the south. Allentown is a little over 40 miles north, and Reading, PA, (pronounced as “red-ding”) is 60 miles west.

Exploring the City

Though Willow Grove is a small town, there’s plenty of things to do and see around here, thanks to its proximity to Philadelphia. The Longwood Garden, created in early 1900s, is a colorful Victorian-era conservatory gardens. The garden beds are designed to ensure that something is always in bloom at all times of year. During a rare winter in which snow blankets the grounds, the tranquil conservatory has several displays in bloom. Tours are scheduled daily, and should you need help with your gardening; there are classes and workshops offered throughout the year.
