Born around 1750, this town underwent a few name changes over the years: Meadstown, Mechanicsburg, Guilford, and finally, Stewartstown. The town was home to Studebaker, which made wagons decades before it transformed into an automobile maker. Today, Stewartstown is an idyllic farming town. Known for its quieter, slower pace, there’s plenty of places to visit on your outdoor adventure.

History and Pennsylvania go hand-in-hand. To learn about Stewartstown’s history, visit the Historical Society, which has thousands of artifacts, photographs, and documents on display. One such example is Stewartstown’s first hand-drawn fire engine, which is surprisingly small. Alternatively, the Stewartstown Engine House and Stewartstown Railroad Station, which are on the National Historic Register, are working railroad stations. Take scenic rides through the countryside on historic coal-fired locomotive trains. What a way to spend the day with family!

The closest large town is York, which is about 20 miles to the north. Further north, you will find Harrisburg is a hair over 45 miles. Lancaster is 40 miles northeast, and Baltimore, MD is a little over 40 miles south of town.

The Great Outdoors

When you rent a travel trailer in Stewartstown, you’ll no doubt wish to explore the wooded wilderness that Pennsylvania is known for. Though the region around Stewartstown is mostly farmlands, there are numerous parks nearby that should check all the right boxes.

House Rock Nature Preserve, for example, is right on the Susquehanna River and has untouched wood groves that are nearly 300 years old. It offers miles of hiking trails and riverside fishing. The nearby Wind Cave Park, which is a private property, features the largest tectonic cave in the USA in which you can spelunk. Note: the owner asks that you arrange for a guide and obtain appropriate equipment if you’re not an experienced caver.

Susquehannock State Park sits on a wooded plateau, which overlooks the Susquehannock River. There are a few miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, passing through meadows and wooded areas. Birdwatching is a popular activity; several species of predator birds and songbirds can be spotted, including but not limited to: osprey, bald eagles, hawks, and vultures.

Prettyboy Reservoir Park, a few miles south of the Pennsylvania-Maryland border, is home to several wildlife, including wild turkeys and white-tailed deer. Archery hunting is permitted in-season with a permit. Recreational activities in this park include hiking, mountain biking, road cycling, fishing, and boating. Kayak and tubing trips on the Gunpowder River, below the Prettyboy Dam, are popular. Bring your Stewartstown motorhome rental here and head outdoors for the day!

RV Parks

When you rent a luxury motorhome in Stewartstown, you’ll need someplace to park it for a few days. There are a few options nearby. Tucquan Park Family Campground, for example, is just across the Susquehanna River and offers the usual amenities like 30/50 amps, bathrooms, and showers. Laundry facilities and WiFi is also available. The campground is very close to a number of hiking and outdoor recreational areas, and it also has a playground and a baseball field for fun.

Otter Creek Campgrounds, on the western side of the River, is a more rustic RV campground, set back into the woods. It offers 30 and 50 amps, and while there are showers and laundry facilities available, there is a small fee to utilize them.

Close to York, the Indian Rock Campground is equipped with full hookups for your RV, showers and laundry facilities, and an RV store. Leashed pets are allowed so don't forget Fido!

Exploring the City

There’s nothing like sun-ripened fruits fresh off the vine! There are several “u-pick” farms in the area. The largest and best known is Brown’s Orchards in Loganville. Depending on the season and weather, harvest a variety of fruit, such as strawberries, cherries, raspberries, apples, and more, then head back to your campground and whip up a pie for dessert.

In the mood for adventure? Take your Stewartstown motorhome rental up to Hershey for an experience to remember. As you come into town, you’ll be greeted by Hershey Chocolate Kiss lamplights, chocolate-themed decor, and dozens of confectioneries lining the streets. The smell of chocolate from the nearby factories wafts through the air on most days. The small park boasts dozens of pulse-pounding roller coaster rides that the children would absolutely enjoy.

Tour the small towns and farms dotting the south-central Pennsylvania region. Several have homes dating back to the 1700s and 1800s, many of which are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Wrap up an exciting day of sightseeing and adventure by visiting one of the local wineries and distilleries, which dots the farm country. The Old Republic Distillery, which got its start in the Prohibition Era (1920s), produces moonshine, rums, and vodkas. The swanky, blues-themed tasting room offers cocktails and mixes, as well, and weekly live music.

Should it be the green rolling hills of Pennsylvania you are seeking, consider a travel trailer rental in Stewartstown. Explore a vineyard, enjoy the local cuisine, watch a sunset, and take in the beautiful landscape. Rent an RV in Stewartstown and enjoy all that Pennsylvania has to offer!
