A tiny town in Bucks County, PA, Springtown was a part of the original Charter granted to William Penn, the man credited with creating Pennsylvania. At some point -- it’s unknown exactly when -- 300 acres of the land was sold to Stephen Twining, who built a grist mill (a coarse flour) and later sold it to Abraham Funk in 1763. Funk immediately set about to improving the grist mill and recruited settlers to the area, and thus Springtown was born.

By early 19th century, Springtown was a tiny but bustling town, complete with a blacksmith, sawmill, general store, tannery, cigar store, and even an insurance company. Three buildings from that era are still standing: two churches and the Springtown Inn. The inn was built around 1830, and though the property changed hands several times over the years, it has always been operated as a hotel.

The closest large town is Allentown, just under 15 miles to the northwest.

The Great Outdoors

When you rent an RV in Springtown, one of the first things you’ll want to do is go on adventures in the outdoors. There are several pockets of wilderness in the area that offer short hiking trails and fishing opportunities.

For a little more room to stretch out, consider the Nockamixon State Park, which is just a few miles to the south. The park, encompassing 10,000 acres, has over 30 miles of trails serpentining through mature woods. The Nockamixon Lake, stretching through the entire park, offers plenty of boating and fishing fun. Smallmouth, largemouth and hybrid striped bass, channel catfish, and other fish are abundant. Although overnight camping isn’t permitted, there are plenty of parking for trailers and motorhomes. Bring your Springtown camper rental here and have a great time!

Pinchot State Forest, Long Pond Conservation Easement, Hickory Run State Park, Pocono Preserve, Bear Creek Preserve, Tobyhanna State Park, and several game lands collectively make over 200,000 acres of pure wilderness. Almost every outdoor recreational activity you can imagine can be done in this cluster of parks: hike, bike, horseback ride, boat, fish, hunt, camp, ski, snowmobile, and more. Some parks allow RV camping, though you may need a permit (usually free).

RV Parks

Have you thought about where you’ll park your motorhome rental from Springtown overnight while you grab some Zs? You should. There are several campgrounds in the area that allow RV camping. The Tohickon Family Campgrounds near Quakertown has plenty of RV lots, though not all have full hookups, showers and restroom facilities, and a convenience store. Set in dense woods, it’s a picturesque location.

Colonial Woods in Upper Black Eddy has a few extra amenities, like a heated pool, full hookups, free WiFi and planned activities.

On occasion, you’ll need to make an unplanned stop overnight. There are a handful of Walmart stores, which are known to be RV friendly, in the area. Just check with the manager before bedding down for the night. Most are under 20 miles, and the closest is in Bethlehem.

Exploring the City

Another advantage when you book a travel trailer in Springtown is the ability to explore the surrounding countryside from the comforts of your temporary home. There’s plenty of things to see and do around town.

Fancy hitting the skies? There are several hot-air balloon companies nearby. Get a bird’s eye view of the rolling hills and lush greenery dotted by shining lakes. Trace the shimmering streams as far as your eye can go. Be sure to pack a bottle of champagne, which is a traditional drink at lofty heights, along with your picnic basket.

Pennsylvania is unique in that there are vast cavern systems underneath the surface. Not many locals know this, surprisingly enough. Caverning is a dangerous hobby and should be undertaken only with an experienced guide. Lost River Caverns, which is just south of Allentown/Bethlehem, offers guided tours lasting about 45 minutes, introducing you to the wonders of the underground world and spelunking. Please note that the cavern tours are not ADA accessible, and wheelchairs and baby strollers must be left at the entrance.

Gilman Museum, which is adjacent to the gift shop and the gem mill, expands on the geology of this particular cavern system and displays fossils and gems that were found in the cave. Also on display are a number of artifacts found in the local area dating back to the 17th century.

Lehigh Valley Zoo, a nonprofit zoo in Schnecksville, is home to hundreds of rare and endangered critters like the West African Dwarf Crocodile and Mexican Gray Wolf. The Zoo is adjacent to the Trexler Nature Preserve, in which you can drive or hike through and observe larger mammals like the Plains Bison, which are endangered, Rocky Mountain Elks, and white-tailed deer. Up close and personal encounters with your favorite wildlife are available, as well!

Grape vines thrive in this part of Pennsylvania, which has mild climate and gently rolling terrain. Explore any number of wineries in the area. The closest is the Black River Farms, which has a limited edition range of exquisite whites, roses, and reds. The tasting room is open Thursdays through Sundays in the afternoons.

Should it be small-town charm and friendly locals you are seeking, consider a travel trailer rental in Springtown. Enjoy some wine, explore a trail, watch a sunset, and take in the landscape. Rent an RV in Springtown and go exploring!
