Though the town wasn’t officially formed until 1902, there were farmers, miners, and settlers in the area working the land as early as 1735, and the locals often traded with the nearby Native American tribes, primarily Lenape. In late 1800s and early 1900s, the town’s main industry was cigar production, one of the few of its kind in United States. The town did not obtain electricity nor running water for its homes until 1910, and it wasn’t until mid-1940s when all of the homes had electricity. Large swaths of Pennsylvania have dense, red clay soil, and this town is no different, hence its name: Red Hill. The nearby park, Green Lane, is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, and people flock there year-round for outdoor fun.

The closest large town is Allentown, 20 miles to north.

Discover Red Hill

The Great Outdoors

Rent an RV in Red Hill and gain access to a world of recreational fun and adventure. The town is adjacent to a small, but popular, park, the Green Lane. Encircling a reservoir, the park offers several miles of multi-use trails. Hiking, biking, and horseback riding are encouraged. There are plentiful photography and birdwatching opportunities in the small bird sanctuary at the north end of the park. And on the opposite end, a boat rental service allows for fishing and sailboating.

Nockamixon State Park, a few miles east of Red Hill, has nearly 10,000 acres of land (when combined with the adjacent state game land), and over 30 miles of trails wind through mature woods and fresh meadows. Bring your horses! The Nockamixon lake, which is classed a warm-water “Big Bass” lake, is rife with fish, including smallmouth and largemouth bass, striped hybrid bass, walleye, and muskellunge. The park provides loaner rods to aspiring fishermen with photo identification.

During the hunting seasons, the adjacent game park permits hunting and trapping of small game, including rabbits, pheasants, and turkeys, and deer. Be sure to obtain the appropriate permits for gun and bow hunting.

RV Parks

When you rent a motorhome in Red Hill, you’ll need someplace to park overnight while you grab a few Zs. There are several campgrounds and RV friendly sites within 10 miles. Though barebone by modern standards, Lazy K Campgrounds in Bechtelsville is in deep, lush woods, and is in quite a pretty location. It does offer full hookups and restrooms.

Quakerwoods Campground in Quakertown which is very close to town features family-friendly amenities like playgrounds and a game area, weekly planned activities for children and adults alike, hot showers, free WiFi, and laundry facilities.

On occasion, you may need to make an unplanned stop overnight. The closest Walmart is in East Greenville, just a few minutes to the north. Be sure to ask the store manager for permission first before you head in for the night.

Exploring the City

Head up into Allentown in your RV rental and dive into the local history. Visit the Museum of Indian Culture, which focuses on the Lenape and Iroquois tribes who once resided in Pennsylvania prior to 1900s. The museum also displays craft goods from other native American tribes in other parts of North America, such as beadwork, dolls, basketry, and pottery. The museum offers guided tours Thursdays through Sundays during the summer months, and Fridays through Sundays the rest of the year.

There are several art galleries, studios, theaters, and exhibitions in Allentown. The Allentown Art Museum features a wide array of art ranging from folk art to Roarin’ 20s evening wear to head-scratching abstract exhibitions to Renaissance paintings. The museum, in addition to guided tours, offers workshops and lectures on a regular basis. Check online for the schedule.

Hit the links! The Allentown Municipal Golf Course has a driving range and a 18-hole Championship Golf Course, and a practice putting green. Jack’s Slice, a restaurant at the golf course, is a local favorite, dishing up pizza since late 1980s.

The nearby Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom showcases thrilling roller coaster and water rides with frightful names like the Constrictor, Demon Drop, Possessed, and Lightning Falls. There are tamer options for toddlers and young children, too. The park also puts on entertaining, toe-tapping musicals on a daily basis, fun for children and adults alike.

Over 130 species of critters make their home at the Lehigh Valley Zoo, ranging from domestic to extinct in the wild. The zoo offers a “private educational connection program,” in which guests can interact with ambassador animals, typically penguins, sloths, armadillos, fennec fox, a few predator birds, and even porcupines. Guests can also feed wild animals like giraffes, lorikeets, and goats. Drive through the adjacent Trexler Nature Preserve and watch for herds of bison and elk, too.

The craft beer and microbrewery business is booming in Allentown. At the end of a long day of sightseeing and adventure, knock back a cold one at one of the local pubs. The Fegley’s Brew Works is a popular local favorite; it features award-winning beers like Arctic Alchemy, Berliner Weisse, Blueberry Belch, and Bagpiper’s Scotch Ale. Note: some ales and beers are made in limited batches and may be available seasonally.
