Pottstown is located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania about 40 miles northwest of Philadelphia and 20 miles southeast of Reading, on the Schuylkill River.
The city was founded in 1752 and named in honor of its founder, John Potts, who purchased 995 acres in the area. Before 1800, the village was originally called Pottsgrove. However, the old name disappeared as the town evolved and became incorporated as a borough in 1815. When you book an RV in Pottstown, you’ll be at the center of a productive farming and dairying region in a County full of beautiful parks, trails, and historic sites.
A motorhome rental in Pottstown is a great starting point to explore Pennsylvania’s lovely countryside. Have a leisurely picnic in one of this area’s nine public parks, or you’ll find nearly 90 miles of trails in Montgomery County to traverse by foot, bicycle, or even horseback. The Schuylkill River Trail is a multi-use trail (the path is shared by bikers, rollerbladers, and joggers) and is projected to be almost 130 miles in length when completed. The popular trail parallels the scenic Schuylkill River as it passes through various towns and boroughs and runs all the way from Philadelphia to Mont Clare.
There are also plenty of opportunities to explore the waterways by boat. About 20 minutes away from Pottstown is Phoenixville, where you can rent a canoe or kayak from Port Providence Paddle to drift down the Schuylkill River. Watch for birds and wildlife along the river’s banks and enjoy a sunny day splashing around in natural beauty.
Another beautiful outdoor setting you’ll want to visit when you rent an RV here is Welkinweir. Welkinweir is a 197-acre oasis featuring a 55-acre arboretum, historic estate house, ecologically diverse wetland, meadow, and woodland habitats. It is located within the 73,000 acres of Hopewell Big Woods, which is the largest contiguous forest in southeastern PA. After you wander the garden, mansion, and conservation area of Welkinweir, you can tackle almost every kind of outdoor activity in the forest--go fishing at French or Hay Creek, rock climb a 60 foot, fixed-pin rock wall, cycle scenic roadways, or paddle on Hopewell and Scotts Run Lakes.
You’ll find quite a few places throughout Montgomery County where you can settle and relax in your Pottstown travel trailer rental. One option only a short drive from Pottstown is the Boulder Woods Campground. Set in an environment of trees, large rocks, and boulders, this campground offers beautiful wooded sites with electric and water, plus a picnic table and fire ring. There’s also tons of amenities to enjoy here, including three swimming pools, a well-stocked camp store and deli, and a private catch-and-release fishing lake.
You might also consider staying the night at French Creek State Park which is open year round, is located close by in neighboring Berks and Chester Counties, and straddles the Schuylkill Highlands. There are more than 60 sites with electric hookups (some include full service) as well as easy access to shower and flush toilet facilities. If you choose to park, here you’ll be based in a 7,730-acre park with fields, lakes, and wetlands to hike, bike and fish, not to mention the largest block of contiguous forest between Washington D.C. and New York City to explore.
If you’re someone that enjoys history, don’t miss Pottsgrove Manor while you’re out cruising around in your RV rental. Open year-round, the manor was built in 1752 for the town’s founder, John Potts. It sits on four acres of property that was once a 1,000-acre plantation, and the mansion has been restored to reflect the time the Potts family resided there. Explore the manor by taking a guided tour, and if you’re seeking unique souvenirs, the museum shop has a selection of 18th-century reproduction items, books, and more.
While you’re in the area, set aside some additional time to make a trip to the Carousel at Pottstown to treat your inner child to an old-fashioned ride on the towns beautiful 100+-year old carousel. Located at the old Pottstown Metal Weld Building, the renovated wooden merry-go-round was built in 1905 and remains one of the oldest carousels in the United States. After you take a spin on this historic piece, there’s also an arcade and 1865 horse-drawn, trolley snack bar to enjoy here.
During your RV rental vacation in Pottstown, you might want to experience the countryside from a birds-eye view. Take to the skies at sunrise or sunset and see the landscape from above in a thrilling hot air balloon ride, which departs year-round from the Pottstown Municipal Airport. There are all forms of entertainment and refreshment to enjoy in this area, including shopping outlets, historic train excursions, award-winning theaters, and a state-of-the-art brewery and distillery.
