The tiny community of Pocono Manor was created by Quakers in late 1800s. Though its growth was never quite as robust as the other neighboring towns, Pocono Manor, PA, remains a quaint, charming community to this day. Many homes reflect the styles of early 1900s era: stick/eastlake, shingle, bungalow, and American Craftsman. It is best known for the Pocono Manor Inn, which claims to be the first resort in this area. It was expanded several times over the years from the original rustic lodge designed by a noted architect, Walter Smedley, to a bustling-yet-elegant resort. Several homes and buildings in this area are on the National Register of Historic Places.

The word, Poconos, comes from a Munsee (a Native American tribe) word, Pokawachne, which means “the creek between two hills.” The Poconos, which is a catchall word for not only the Poconos Mountains area, but also the nearby state parks, forests, preserves, and game lands, has long been a popular vacation spot for people from all walks of life. Rent an RV in Pocono Manor and explore the endless history, culture, art, and outdoor adventure.

The closest large town is Scranton, a little over 30 miles north.

The Great Outdoors

A common reason to rent a travel trailer in Pocono Manor is to, of course, explore the wilderness without having to endure rocky soil and leaky tents. The closest mountain are the Pocono Mountains, which covers over 2,400 square miles of dense woods and rolling hills. The mountains have several picturesque waterfalls, which will thrill any nature photographer, and hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails, some tame, and others challenging. Whitewater rafting (particularly in late spring), boating, fishing, and swimming are all popular water activities, as well.

The Poconos is very likely the first to commercialize skiing, thanks to a local inventor who created a machine that could make artificial snow. Now a major industry, the eight ski areas in Poconos offer a wide array of winter activities, including skiing, tubing, snowboarding, and the ski areas adjacent to waterways also offer ice skating, hockey, and fishing. Most areas have beginner and intermediate slopes. For the skilled and more adventurous skiers, there are black diamond and double-diamond slopes, too. Though not the oldest, the largest ski area is Camelback in Tannersville, which boasts 39 trails.

There are several state game lands in the area in which hunting and trapping are allowed during the appropriate seasons. Deer, turkeys, grouse, rabbits, pheasants, and many other small games are common prey. Black bear and elk are permitted, though the hunting seasons for either are very short and there is a strict limit on bags (one bear per year, for example). Hunting in Pennsylvania is highly regulated, and the rangers and managers have been known to enact hefty fines for violations. Be sure to obtain the appropriate licenses. Hiking and biking are welcomed on the state game lands, though there are not as many established trails and conditions may be rugged. Mushroom and berry picking are also popular activities.

RV Parks

When you book an RV in Pocono Manor, be sure to map out where you’ll park overnight while you grab catch a few hours of sleep. This far out in the boonies, there are plenty of candidates. Most of the state parks, such as Pinchot State Forest, allow RV camping. However, not all of them have hookups or dump stations.

There are several private campgrounds in the area, all with different levels of services and amenities. For example, the Hemlock Campground and Cottages in Tobyhanna includes 30 amps electric, water, and cable, but dumping incurs an additional fee.

Four Seasons Campgrounds in Scotrun, in contrast, has full hookups, pull-thru sites, WiFi, a camp/RV store, and a game area.
