The first settlers arrived in the area that would become Phoenixville, PA, in 1732. At the time, the local immigrants called the settlement Manavon. When a major manufacturer, Phoenix Iron Works, moved into the area to establish iron and steel mills, it also launched other factories making silk, hoseries and underwear, matches, and even a particular type of artisan pottery which is highly collectible today. The town inhabitants, in a nod to the major employer, renamed the town Phoenixville in 1849 when they were required by the US Postal Service to make it official.

The Phoenixville Historic District, which is registered on the National Register of Historic Places, is the largest in Chester County. Phoenixville had its 15 minutes of fame. Its historic theater and several other locations in the town were featured prominently in the 1958 classic movie, The Blob. Something special must be in the water. Many local athletes went on to play for major baseball and football teams. Kevin Bacon is a well-known actor, but perhaps the most famous of them all is Harry A. Longabaugh, also known as the Sundance Kid, an outlaw member of Butch Cassidy’s gang.

Some cities to visit while in the area include Wilmington, DE, located around 30 minutes south, and King of Prussia, around nine miles east of Phoenixville.

Discover Phoenixville

The Great Outdoors

Skip the hotels and get closer to nature when you rent an RV in Phoenixville. There are several pockets of wilderness, even this close to Philadelphia. The Wissahickon Valley Park looks diminutive on a map but stretches several miles. Hiking trails lining both sides of the gorge cover some 50 miles. At the bottom of the gorge is a small creek that burbles and babbles its way south to join the Schuylkill River. The creek runs fast, and in springs, kayaking and canoeing are possible, particularly if there was heavy snow in the winter prior.

French Creek State Park is a massive 100,000-acre park, which is one of the largest chunks of contiguous forests in between New York City and Washington, D.C. There are several miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The varied terrain also means a variety of wildlife. Some rare and endangered animals, like the elusive black bear, are known to reside in this park. A protected Audubon park, endangered birds like the yellow-crowned night heron and short-eared owl, are occasionally sighted in this park. Avid birders may have some luck adding to their list. The lakes, which are stocked with trout, bass, and other native fish, have public boat ramps. Bring a Phoenixville travel trailer rental here as the campgrounds have hookups.

RV Parks

To skip hotels, that means finding someplace to park a Phoenixville RV rental. Street parking is against the regulations in many neighborhoods, and it may be necessary to find alternative sites. Not far away, the Brandywine Creek Campground in Lyndell is in the heart of Brandywine Valley. The campground is adjacent to Marsh Creek State Park where there are several miles of hiking trails and a fair-sized fishing lake.

Birchview Farm Campground in Coatesville may be a good option, too. A family-run business, the campgrounds offers full hookups and oversized lots for large rigs and your Phoenixville camper rental. It’s also near hiking trails, and there is a small catch-and-release fishing pond on site.
Exploring the City

There are many upsides when you book an RV in Phoenixville, PA, and one of them is its proximity to many local attractions and the great city of Philadelphia. The Valley Forge National Historical Park is just a few minutes away. As the site of a key historical event that shaped the future of this country in 1777-1778, it’s worth taking a few hours to visit the park. The museum displays many original artifacts, weapons, uniforms, and even art created by the soldiers during that hard, ill-fated winter. Reenactors dressed in period clothes answer questions as they demonstrate the art of making hand-forged bullets and cooking over a campfire.

The John James Audubon Center in Audubon is the home of John James Audubon, a famed artist, and naturalist. He transformed how people around the world think of birds by demonstrating that they are not nuisance pests, but rather a critical part of the world’s ecosystem. Tour Audubon’s original home, a quaint fieldstone farmhouse, and explore the interactive museum. Use a microscope to examine birds’ feathers up close. Experience what it’s like to build a nest from start to finish (sans laying eggs!). Note: Some GPS do not recognize Audubon as a town; use Norristown instead if this is the case.

The Philadelphia Zoo, found on the banks of the Schuylkill River, is considered America’s first zoo. Established in 1859, the zoo is laid out in an old-fashioned Victorian garden, in which trees and carefully manicured shrubbery line the walkways. Mesh tunnel bridges arches overhead, and occasionally big cats or orangutans will cross as they stretch their legs. Over 1,300 animals make their home at the zoo, many of which are endangered or threatened. The Zoo is committed to the conservation and recovery of these wildlife. Guided tours and behind-the-scenes tours provide guests opportunities for up-close and personal encounters with ambassador animals.

Tour the neighboring towns around Phoenixville in an RV rental. Many towns have homes and other buildings that are historic, dating back to the founding of this country.
