The apocryphal story about Pennsburg’s origin says William Penn, the man credited for founding Pennsylvania, purchased the land for "two watch coats, four pairs of stockings and four bottles of cider." Later, Pennsylvania Germans, who later became known as the Pennsylvania Dutch, settled in the area, and a town eventually formed.

Though Pennsburg, PA is a tiny town, there’s plenty of things to see in the area. Several homes and structures in Pennsburg and the neighboring towns date back as far as late 1600s and are on the National Register of Historic Structures.

The closest large town is Allentown just under 20 miles north. Philadelphia is about 50 miles to the south with Reading, PA, (pronounced as “red-ding”) being just over 30 miles west.

Discover Pennsburg

The Great Outdoors

When you rent an RV in Pennsburg, you’ll likely want to hit the outdoors and explore a wide array of recreational activities. Pennsburg is a hop, a skip, and a jump away from a small but popular park, the Green Lane. The 3,400-acre park encompasses the Green Lane Reservoir and offers several miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. There is a small bird sanctuary on the north end of the park, which offers plentiful photography and birdwatching opportunities. Close to the south point, there is a boat rental service, if you want to hit the waters. The service also offers pontoon boat tours in summers and autumns.

Another nearby park is the Nockamixon State Park. Combined with the adjacent state game lands, the park has nearly 10,000 acres of land for you to explore. There are 30 miles of multi-use trails, suitable for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Year-round boating is allowed, though the lake frequently freezes up in winters. Sailboats and catamarans are popular vessels on the Nockamixon lake. Classed a “big bass” lake, fishermen can catch a variety of fish, including smallmouth and largemouth bass, striped hybrid bass, walleye, and muskellunge. Loaner fishing rods are available with photo ids.

During the hunting seasons, the adjacent state park allows hunting and trapping of small game, including rabbits, pheasants, and turkeys, and deer. You must obtain the appropriate permits, however.

RV Parks

When you rent a motorhome in Pennsburg, you’ll need someplace to park overnight while you rest your head. There are several options within 10 miles’ radius. Lazy K Campgrounds is a barebone park, offering little more than full hookups and restrooms. The site is in deep woods, and quite picturesque so don't forget your camera for those amazing sunset shots.

Quakerwoods Campground, on the other hand, features amenities like playgrounds and game area, planned activities, hot showers, free WiFi, and laundry facilities.

On occasion, you’ll need to make an unplanned stop overnight. There are a handful of Walmart stores, which are known to be RV friendly, within 10 miles. The closest is in East Greenville. Be sure to ask the store manager for permission beforehand.

Exploring the City

When you rent a motorhome in Pennsburg, you will have access to several unique locations including Goschenhoppen Historians, which houses the Folklife Museum and Library and features the lives and culture of Pennsylvania Germans (also known as Pennsylvania Dutch), and the exhibits include local folk art, textiles, crafts, and examples of writings. Head up into Allentown in your RV rental and dive into the local history. Learn about the original Mack trucks, which were manufactured in Allentown, and explore the antique trucks, vintage models, and browse the memorabilia. Learn about the local Native Americans who once resided in this part of state by visiting the Museum of Indian Culture. Although the museum focuses on the Lenape tribe, it displays artistry from other parts of this country, including beadwork, dolls, basketry, and pottery. The museum offers guided tours Thursdays through Sundays during the summer months, and Fridays through Sundays the rest of the year.

Hankering for a little fun and adventure? Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom in Allentown may fit the bill. It boasts thrilling roller coaster and water rides with hair-raising names like the Constrictor, Demon Drop, Possessed, and Lightning Falls. There are tamer options for toddlers and young children, too. The park also has a number of shows on a daily basis, including singalongs with Snoopy and Charlie Brown.

At the end of a long day of sightseeing and fun, take a long, winding drive through the Pennsylvania woods in your luxury motorhome rental from Pennsburg.
