One of the oldest villages in Bucks County, Penns Park was originally known as Logtown as early as 1716. The name changed to Pennsville in early 1800s in a nod to William Penn, the founder of the Pennsylvania state, and then once again to Penns Park. Just outside the town, at the intersection of Penns Park Road and Mud Road, there is a log house that is, or so the local lore goes, the oldest house in the county, built by William Smith who arrived in the area in 1685.

The claim for the first settlers, however, belongs to John Chapman and his family, who arrived in 1684. Local history says the family either lived in a cave or a sod hut, also known as “soddy," which was made out of grassy turf cut in squares and stacked to create walls.

Doylestown, is the nearest large town, about 10 miles northwest and the city of Trenton, NJ is around 20 miles to the southeast.

Discover Penns Park

The Great Outdoors

When you rent an RV in Penns Park, you likely want to explore the wilderness and all the fun that comes with it without having to rough it.

Tyler State Park, close to Newtown, encompasses nearly 2,000 acres of old growth hickory, oak, beech, pecan, and sycamore, and open, airy meadows. Miles of trails, some paved to be ADA compliant, wind through the park. Horses are allowed on the dirt paths (as are hikers), and there are several barns in the area at which you can rent horses for trail riding. Though shallow-bottomed boats are allowed in the Neshaminy Creek, which serpentines through the park, the water levels can get low in summers and dry years. You may have to drag your boat at certain points, especially in August.

The fun continues here year-round. Cross country skiing, ice-skating, sledding, and ice-fishing are all popular wintertime activities. At various times during the year, local organizations and theater holds event in the park, like theater plays, concerts, and festivals. Head on over with your camper rental from Penns Park and join in the fun!

RV Parks

When you rent a motorhome from Penns Park, you’ll need someplace to park overnight while you grab your eight-hours of shut-eye. Unfortunately, there are ordinances in place preventing RV campgrounds in the area. However, there are several options up north near Nockamixon State Park, which is around 30 miles to north.

Colonial Woods in Upper Black Eddy may be a good candidate. It offers full hookups for your RV and water, electricity, and cable. WiFi is included, as well, though the signal may be spotty in the more densely wooded area.

Alternatively, Little Red Barn has been in the business for over 50 years, and in addition to the usual full-hookups amenities, they include fire rings at each site and free WiFi. Heads-up: this campground is open only between late spring and mid-fall.

Exploring the City

Getting away from the hustle and bustle of the big city doesn’t mean you have to be bored. There’s plenty of things to do around Penns Park. The local farmer’s market in Wrightstown is one of the best in the area. They emphasize sustainable farming practice, and select the vendors carefully, favoring those who don’t use pesticides or offer pasture-raised meats, organic eggs, cheeses, and yogurts. The farmer’s markets operate on a twice-monthly schedule December through April, and the rest of year, every Saturday morning.

Hit the skies and get an aerial view of the rolling Bucks County valley! The Endless Hot Air Balloons operates out of Doylestown, and all flights include champagne toasts. Balloons are launched twice a day: at dawn and sunset. Check online for the schedules.

Have a kiddo who loves Sesame Street? You can meet all the popular muppets like Elmo, Oscar, Big Bird, and more at Sesame Place in Langhorne. And if you’re too grown-up for that (ahem), there are action-packed roller coaster rides that’ll thrill everyone. Explore the storefronts, Hooper’s Store in particular, and the iconic 123 stoop.

Hit the links! Neshaminy Golf Course is open to the public, and in addition to daily rates, offers golf cart rentals and lessons. The idyllic, gently rolling terrain makes the course challenging for the pros, but not so much that beginners can’t enjoy it. The babbling Neshaminy Creek runs by 14th hole, providing a tranquil backdrop.

At the end of a long day of adventure and sightseeing, stop at the locals’ favorite ice cream shop, the Owowcow Creamery. A small business with a few locations in Bucks County, all ice creams’ ingredients are locally sourced and hand-made. Though their flavors change on a weekly basis, their selections are crowd pleasers, including options like “I hate chocolate,” sweet honey cream, and sunbutter and jelly, which is a throwback to the classic peanut butter and jelly. Not convinced yet? Owowow creamery has earned several awards and unsolicited media mentions.
