Named after its founder Peter Orwig in 1823, Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania is an attractive town in the heart of Schuylkill County. It once served as the county seat (until it was moved to Pottsville in 1851) and has retained its charming, small-town feel.

It’s a great place to rent an RV while exploring the Appalachian Trail and the historic towns of Schuylkill County. It’s served by a good selection of RV parks and within easy access of one of the United States’ premier raptor viewing destinations.

Discover Orwigsburg

The Great Outdoors

Book a campervan rental in Orwigsburg and make the short drive east to the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, a research center, and conservation training site that’s located along the Appalachian Flyway. It’s a prime destination for viewing and learning about hawks, eagles, and falcons, which are identified and counted by staff to provide the world's longest record of raptor populations. Follow the Lookout Trail that leads to the various raptor viewing sites along a ridge of Hawk Mountain or embark on one of the hiking routes that connect to the Appalachian Trail.

A short drive north from Orwigsburg takes you to the Locust Lake State Park, which centers around a 52-acre lake. Take to the waters by boat and canoe or enjoy a dip at one of the designated swimming areas, with hiking trails radiating from the shores. The park is particularly popular with anglers looking to catch bass, pickerel, and panfish and is stocked several times throughout the year with brown and brook trout.

Orwigsburg is also within easy access of the Tuscarora State Park, which is named after the Tuscarora Indians who once inhabited the area. It’s another popular fishing destination for bass, yellow perch, and trout, with the Tuscarora Lake ringed by a walking trail. Follow the hiking route that leads along a former logging road, or ascend to the summit of Locust Mountain for sweeping views across the park.

RV Parks

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Orwigsburg and drive south to the Appalachian RV Campground in Shartlesville. It offers spacious sites with full hookups, a swimming pool, and cable TV connections, as well as an on-site restaurant if you don’t feel like cooking.

Also in Shartlesville is the Mountain Springs Camping Resort, which features more than 290 RV sites that range from fully-shaded back-ins to pull-throughs. Take advantage of the ping pong tables, volleyball court, and swimming pools, as well as a range of planned activities throughout the summer months.

Or, you can drive to nearby Auburn and the Christmas Pines Campground where you can choose between their 30 and 50-amp RV sites. There’s a children’s playground, a basketball court, and on-site laundry facilities, as well as fishing available in the private pond.

You can make the 15-minute drive into Hamburg to the local Walmart where you may be able to camp for a night or two with the manager’s permission.
