Although the town of Oreland was not officially established until 1889, it had inhabitants in the area as early as 1686. William Penn, the man credited for starting the process toward democracy in what would become the United States and for the founding of the state of Pennsylvania, had one of his homes in the area. Oreland, PA obtained its name from the local lime and ore mines that were throughout the area.

The closest large town is Philadelphia, about 16 miles south. Allentown is 40 miles to the north. Reading (pronounced as “red-ding”) is just over 60 miles west.

Discover Oreland

The Great Outdoors

Renting an RV in Oreland will open up a world of outdoor recreational activities in the area. Pockets of wilderness remain in spite of being so close to Philadelphia. A poorly kept secret is the nearby Pennypack Preserve, where trails wind through mature woods, and shy white-tailed deer and foxes can still be viewed.

Appearances are deceiving when looking at a map of the Wissahickon Valley Park. There are over 50 miles of multi-use trails, ideal for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. The idyllic, burbling creek sets a tranquil scene for fishermen. Catch bass, trout, and sunfish while you enjoy a leisurely day.

Further out of the area is where you find French Creek State Park, which is the largest park in southeastern Pennsylvania, and an outdoor-person’s dream. A lush mix of forests, wetlands, and aquatic environments provides adventurers several choices in their activities. Hike, bike, fish, boat, and photograph the landscape while enjoying a relaxing day in the outdoors. Miles of trails meander through hickory, oak, and maple groves. Crumbling ruins of old bridges forges, and abandoned mills are still scattered around the park. Park your rental RV in one of the large parking spots and go explore!

RV Parks

When you book a camper rental in Oreland, you’ll, unfortunately need to head out of town to find an RV campgrounds or resort to park it in. The KOA in West Chester features amenities such as 30/50 amps, WiFi, playgrounds, and a pet park area for Fido.

Although Marsh Creek State Park doesn’t allow RV camping, the adjacent Brandywine Creek Campground may be a good candidate. It offers amenities like 30/50 amps, WiFi, a bathhouse, and a pool. There is also a fishing pond for you to enjoy.

Seeking a more rustic setting? French Creek State Park offers RV camping, although most lots do not offer any type of hookups. The few lots with hookups tend to be booked quickly. Reserve in advance.

Exploring the City

Orelands’s proximity to Philadelphia makes it an ideal “home base” while you explore the area in your Oreland luxury motorhome rental.

Morris Arboretum, owned and maintained by University of Pennsylvania, houses over 13,000 plants, which are cultivated and nourished. The gardens are designed so that there are plants in bloom in most sections at any time of year.

The Dorrance H. Hamilton Fernery (greenhouse), which is an unique structure, is the only Victorian-era greenhouse USA. A maze-like path guides you past waterfalls, ponds, and walls of massive green ferns. Climb an aerial course to gain an unique view of the forest below your feet.

Valley Forge, just west of Philadelphia, is a tranquil location that’s a draw for runners, bicyclists and history buffs. The monuments, statues, and buildings serve as a reminder of the harsh winter that General Washington and his ragtag army endured in the name of freedom, and the eventual, improbable victory.

History buffs should consider visiting the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Franklin Institute, and National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Tour the historic homes in the Franklin Court and the surrounding area, where venerable people lived, including Ben Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson.

There’s more to Philadelphia than history, though. Art, food (cheesesteaks, especially), and music all captivate this wonderful city.

Run up the “Rocky steps," which lead up to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and step inside to see some of the world’s most famous artists. The shortlist includes Diego Rivera, Claude Monet, and Vincent Van Gogh, with many more distinguished artists located throughout the Museum’s vaulted halls.

The Philadelphia Zoo is diligently working to help endangered animals, like the Amur leopard and the western lowland gorilla, make a come back. Over 1,300 animals call the zoo home. Bring the kids and make a day of it.

There are several fabulous restaurants, pubs, bars, and nightclubs, but are located mostly in the southern portion of Philadelphia's “Center City” area.

The iconic “Philly Cheesesteak” is a must-have. There are hundreds of options in the area, and it can be tough to figure out which will deliver The Steak, and it’s often a topic of heated debate for the locals and those from out of town. This much is known though: a real cheesesteak place will not call them cheesesteaks. They are simply “steaks.” If you see a Philadelphia restaurant advertising cheesesteaks, skip it. On a similar note, if a cheesesteak restaurant offers other meals like burgers and chicken sandwiches, it’s very likely not a genuine cheesesteak shop either.

Jim’s Steaks, south of the Independence Center, is a no-frills steak shop, established in 1939 and has die-hard devoted fans numbering in the thousands.

Not as well known as the steaks, the roast pork sandwich is another classic Philly fare. It’s a regional favorite, introduced by Italian immigrants in early 20th century. Tender, oven-roasted pork shoulder, shaved or chopped, layered with melted sharp provolone cheese, and packed into a crusty roll. There are several fantastic options in the area; John’s Pork Roast, which was established in 1930, is one of the oldest and most beloved.

Whether you’re a Pennsylvania history buff or a nature lover (or both), consider a camper rental in Oreland. Enjoy the local cuisine, watch a sunrise, and take in the vast landscape. Rent an RV in Oreland, PA and go exploring!
