Almost certainly one of the oldest towns in Pennsylvania, if not the oldest on record, Newtown Square, has a document dated 1684, assigning two men to the task of collecting tax for a courthouse and prison. Historians speculate that given that there were sufficient people to not only necessitate a courthouse and prison but also to enact levies, the town of Newtown Square was well established at that time. Although very few homes and buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries are still standing, there are five structures that are registered on the National Register of Historic Places: an octagonal schoolhouse, a covered bridge, a church, a tavern, and a mill. The mill, which is called the Paper Mill House even though they produced fabric, is used as a museum today and can be toured by the general public.

Another notable spot in Newtown Square is the Railroad Museum, which is housed in the former Newtown Square Rail Station. The museum features several artifacts related to the railroad industry, including an authentic Red Arrow trolley car, a vintage steam locomotive, and various maps and artworks.

Cruise over for a day trip to Philadelphia, located less than 30 miles away. If it's more adventure you are seeking, head southwest for about another 30 miles and see what Wilmington, DE has to offer.

The Great Outdoors

Rent an RV in Newtown Square, skip the hotel scene, and get closer to nature. Hike, bike, skip and jump the winding, circuitous trails that weave and criss-cross the small-but-mighty Ridley Creek State Park. The idyllic Ridley Creek bisects the valley nearly in half. Trouts all but jump into anglers’ nets. A wide range of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, sly fox, and clever raccoon make their home in this park. A sharp-eyed visitor may spot a hawk or two soaring high above on thermal drifts as they scrutinize for small rodents and other prey to hunt.

For something resembling solitude, hop into a Newtown Square camper rental and wheel on over to Wharton State Forest in New Jersey. This park, the largest in New Jersey, sprawls some 123,000 acres. Including the Batona Trail, which runs nearly 50 miles, there are well over 100 miles of multi-use trails. Know for a specific type of terrain called the Pine Barrens. This region is where the infamous “Jersey Devil” is purported to reside. As one might imagine, the area is relatively barren to woodlands in other parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, devoid of nearly all plant life aside from a certain type of pine trees. Wild animals seem to do just fine, though! Although black bear sightings are rare these days, they do occur. White-tailed deer, bobcats, beavers, foxes, and river otters are common sights. A wildlife photographer will not leave disappointed. Bring your Newtown Square travel trailer rental to Wharton State Forest. It offers a few campgrounds, some of which have hookups for RVs.

RV Parks

When you book an RV in Newtown Square, don’t forget to plan for where you’ll park while you hit the sack. This close to the city, there are regulations prohibiting overnight street parking. Fortunately, there are a few private campgrounds within 30 miles’ radius. The family-friendly West Chester KOA in Coatesville features several fun activities and events for children and adults alike. They also rent kayaks and boats to guests.

Its sister park, the KOA in Clarksboro, NJ, is a smaller site. However, what it lacks in size, it makes up for in amenities with a jazzy dog park, a bouncy trampoline, and an on-site camp store. Both facilities offer full hookups, pull-thru and back-in lots, and free WiFi.

Walmart is known to be RV-friendly and often allows RVs and motorhomes to use the parking lots overnight. There are a few Walmart stores within 10 miles; the closest is in Springfield.

Exploring the City

A luxury RV rental from Newtown Square will look equally at home at a posh golf course as at a Walmart store. There are several golf courses open to the public. Cobbs Creek in Philadelphia boasts two 18-hole courses designed by renowned architect Bobby Wilson, one of which was ranked #6 nationally for the best municipal course. Though the fairways are suited to both beginners and experienced golfers alike, it’s highly recommended that the players have an accurate swing due to the narrow fairways and tricky traps.

No visit to Philadelphia is complete without a stop at the Franklin Square and the Independence Center. Walk the same streets that the founding fathers once strolled upon. Dine at the same taverns that stood over 200 years ago. Consider the life these esteemed men had. How they discussed, debated, and fought for the future of this country. Without these distinguished people, this country might be a very different place today.

Philadelphia isn’t all about history. There’s also art. Music. Booze. And of course, food. The topic of where to find a proper Philly cheesesteak is fiercely debated by long-time locals and out-of-towners alike. There are two top contenders who claims to have invented the steak. Ask the locals for the best one.

Cap off a tour of Philadelphia with a steak and a glass of local craft beer, and you’ll have created the perfect Philadelphia visit. Rent an RV in Newtown Square and make new memories with family and friends.
