Originally known as Coryell’s Ferry, the current name was born after a disastrous fire in 1790 destroyed several mills and homes in the area. The reconstruction was called a “new hope.” After the historic Delaware Crossing and post-Battle of Trenton and Princeton, General Washington is said to have destroyed the ferry to prevent the British from pursuing his troops.

In late 1800s and early 1900s, New Hope became a popular summer vacation spot for both Philadelphia and New York citizens seeking to escape the sweltering heat that permeated the cities. Bucks County Playhouse, which has been open since early 1920s, featured many plays and musical productions. Several notable performers headlined at the theater, including Liza Minnelli, Robert Redford, and Grace Kelly.

The closest large town is Doylestown, PA, about 10 miles southwest.

Discover New Hope

The Great Outdoors

When you rent a motorhome in New Hope, you likely want to hit the outdoors for fresh air, fun, and adventure. Walking and biking paths run the entire length of the Delaware Canal State Park, which parallels the Delaware River for 60 miles. There are simple boat launches at various points along the trail for smaller crafts like kayaks, paddle boats, and canoes. Motorized boats are common on the river, as well, though you may need to use a marina’s boat launch for larger boats. The river contains mostly warm-water fish, like the American Shad, smallmouth bass, striped bass, and walleye.

The fun doesn’t stop in winter. This park is popular with cross-country skiers, who enjoy the miles of groomed trails. The small ponds often freeze up, providing an excellent surface for ice skaters to practice on. Though a rare event, when the Delaware River freezes up, locals and those from out-of-towner will hit the ice for ice skating, sailing, racing, and fishing. There are plenty of parking spots along the Delaware River Trail that can accommodate your New Hope travel trailer rental.

Across the river, the Baldpate Mountain, just south of Lambertville, NJ, is a popular park for hikers and nature photographers. Owls, eagles, and other raptors are regular visitors, and they often make their nests in this park. At one end of the park, there is a small fenced area to allow dogs to run off leash. The park management runs frequent nature programs and guided walks, educating the visitors about the wildlife in the park.

RV Parks

Don’t forget to figure out where to park your RV rental overnight while you grab a few hours of sleep. There are a few campgrounds to the north, near Upper Black Eddy. Beaver Valley Family Campground offers its guests the choice of parking in an open space or in deep woods. Their amenities include WiFi, swimming pools, and easy access to hiking trails.

Colonial Woods, also very close by, is set in mature woods, and they too have full hookups for your RV, pools, and as an added bonus, it has a convenience store with basic necessities stocked.

Exploring the City

Named one of “America’s Favorite Towns” by Travel + Leisure, New Hope is known for boutique shops, riverside restaurants, theater, and other cultural attractions. People-watch as you dine in one of the Main Street’s patio cafes or enjoy the sailboats drifting by along the scenic Delaware River. Craft beer is a time-honored tradition in Pennsylvania, and into a nod to that, many pubs in New Hope have local breweries on tap, often excluding the more popular domestic and imported beers. Hand-crafted household items, jewelry, and pottery, are among the many unique items available in the little shops dotting the town.

The Bucks County Children’s Museum has a number of interactive exhibitions for both children and adults to enjoy. Embark on a virtual hot air balloon ride, dig for buried treasure, build a toy car, play Operations on a life-sized model, and more.

There’s nothing like freshly picked fruits, still warm from the sun. The Solebury Orchards has blueberries, blackberries during summers, and in fall, apples, and cherries. If you can’t wait for the pickin’ season, stop by their market where they have other seasonal fruits and vegetables sourced from the neighboring farms. Handmade apple cider, applesauce, and apple juice are available year-round, even in winters.

Go on a walking tour of New Hope. Several historic homes and buildings still stand today, including the Parry Mansion, a charming fieldstone house, which was owned by the founder of New Hope. Guided tours of the home’s interior feature the period furnishings, tools, appliances, and other artifacts of various eras from late 1700s till early 1900.

Should you be seeking a town in Pennsylvania that is well known for its slower pace of life, friendly locals, and idyllic scenery, consider a motorhome rental in New Hope. Hang out by the campfire, watch a sunset, and bask in the landscape. Rent an RV in New Hope, PA and enjoy.
