Stretching along the southern bank of the Nesquehoning Creek, Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania is one of the oldest mining towns in Carbon County. Anthracite coal was discovered here in 1785, and the Room Run gravity railroad was built in 1830 to transport the coal to Mauch Chunk.

As the settlement grew, a sister community of Italian migrants was founded in 1884 overlooking the town, although rich deposits of coal were discovered beneath what became known as “Little Italy” during World War I. The entire community, its village church, and social club were moved and reassembled at New Columbus, which lies across the creek from Nesquehoning Village today.

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your motorhome rental in Nesquehoning and head to the Glen Onoko Falls, which are situated within a nature preserve on the eastern edge of town. A steep hiking trail leads to a series of waterfalls, with the biggest and most impressive being the Onoko Falls that cascade just over 195 feet. Continue to the picturesque Hidden Sweet Falls, with the loop trail taking you across rock scrambles and through a tunnel of rhododendrons.

Farther east sprawls the Beltzville State Park, a 3,000-acre reserve that encompasses the Beltzville Dam and the Pohopoco Creek. Try your luck at luring a variety of bass, walleye, and trout (with the latter regularly stocked in the Pohopoco Creek) or hit one of the hiking trails. Aside from traversing the surrounding forests, the trails take in the industrial heritage of the region at an old gristmill and an abandoned slate quarry.

Rent an RV in Nesquehoning and drive in the opposite direction to arrive at the Tuscarora State Park, which is named after the Tuscarora Indians who once inhabited the area. It extends across Locust Valley and is traversed by numerous hiking trails that include a former logging road and the Locust Mountain Trail that ascends to the summit. Follow the easy Lake View Trail around the shores of Tuscarora Lake or cast a line to catch bass, yellow perch, and trout in the warm waters.

RV Parks

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Nesquehoning and pull into one of the RV sites at the Jim Thorpe Camping Resort. It offers both pull-through and back-in sites with full hookups, as well as a swimming pool and hay rides during the warm summer months.

Or, you can drive into nearby Lehighton to stay at the Riders Resort, which is a motorcycle enthusiast campground in the area. There’s a large in-ground swimming pool where you can cool off and a game room too, as well as a barbecue area where you can mingle with other guests.

If you’ve got a big rig, book a site at the StonyBrook RV Resort, another family-friendly campground that’s located in Lehighton. There are a range of 50-amp RV sites to select from, as well as cable TV, picnic tables, and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the property.

Exploring the City

Pick up your RV rental near Nesquehoning and spend a day exploring the historic sights of Jim Thorpe, which lies just a few minutes’ drive to the east. Admire the beautifully preserved Italianate villa of former coal and railroad magnate Asa Packer, which was completed in 1861 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tour the lavishly appointed interior that features original woodwork and period furnishings, then visit the grand Harry Packer Mansion that stands next door.

Don’t miss a visit to the Old Jail Museum, a beautiful two-story stone structure that watches over the town of Jim Thorpe. It houses 27 cells, plus additional dungeon cells that were used as solitary confinement, and the warden’s living quarters at the front of the building. Join a guided tour to learn about the hanging of seven Irish coal miners here in the 19th century or visit after dark for one of their spine-tingling ghost tours.

Model train enthusiasts shouldn’t miss a visit to the Pocono Museum Unlimited in nearby Lehighton. It features an extensive model train display that includes more than 2,000 feet of track and 14 trains that travel through a meticulously recreated rural Pennsylvania countryside. Aside from the model highway with moving vehicles, drive-in theater, and amusement park, the museum is also home to a rare collection of O-scale train sets dating back to the 1940s.
