The land that would later become Mountville, PA, was discovered by Scotch-Irish immigrants to be one of the finest farming soils in Pennsylvania. A limestone bedrock, deep beneath the ground, permeated the soil. Between that and the mild climate, the immigrants transformed the dense Pennsylvania woods into a patchwork of farms laid out over gently rolling hills. Although these settlers trickled in during the late 1710s and idly formed something resembling a village over the subsequent decades, Mountville was not officially founded till 1906. And even then, it was somewhat begrudgingly done. The town residents wanted to install a municipal water system, and to do so, they had to make their town an official place in the records.
Today, Mountville is both a farming community and a bedroom community for Lancaster, which is about 10 miles to the east. It’s well known for a popular haunted house that seems to pop up only in autumns: Field of Screams. It’s consistently rated the best haunted-house attraction in the area. Book an RV in Mountville, PA, and gain a world of adventure and fun to take the whole family to.
Skip the hotels and get closer to nature in a Mountville travel trailer rental. Though Lancaster is a farming region, there are several pockets of wilderness in which old growth woods can be found. The Chickies Rock is a local landmark. Once employed only by the shifty youths for “parking” in the 1960s, it has been transformed into a popular hiking and rock-climbing destination. The Chickies Rock’s summit, only 100 feet high, is hardly the highest in Pennsylvania. It does offer a sweeping, grand view of the Susquehanna River and the low valley around. The quartzite outcropping is popular with climbers for its hard, crackled surface that are ideal for handholds.
The Northwest Lancaster County River Trail runs for 14 miles along an old towpath on the Susquehanna River. The trail starts in Columbia, PA, passes beneath the Chickies Rock’s summit, through old train tunnels, and skims the outskirts of several towns before terminating near the Three Mile Island, the site of a nuclear plant. No need to worry about radiation, though. It’s perfectly safe. The trail is paved, making it ideal for running and riding on, but it can be hilly. With the river on one side and dense, quiet oak and maple woods on the other, it’s a scenic trail that will delight photographers. Heads-up: parking at the smaller parks in south-central Pennsylvania can be a challenge because many were created in the ‘50s and ‘60s. It may be easier to leave the rental RV at a campground.
Though the fringes of Lancaster are mainly farmlands, overnight street parking is still prohibited. When you search for an RV in Mountville, be sure to figure out where you’ll stay overnight. RV-friendly campgrounds in this area are plentiful. Circle M RV & Camping Resort, named for a wildly serpentine creek that resembles the letter “M," is on the outskirts of Lancaster. Circle M bills itself as a “western-themed” resort and offers several amenities like themed activities, creekside lots for easy fishing access, and an indoor pool. As an added bonus, it’s also pet-friendly.
The KOA near Elizabethtown may be an option, too. Conveniently situated halfway between Hershey, Harrisburg, and Lancaster, it also features upscale parking pads, a fishing pond, and a dog park. This campground has received awards for outstanding customer service.
Explore the countryside in style with a Mountville luxury motorhome rental. South-central Pennsylvania is well known for its Amish communities. But that’s not all! Turkey Hill, despite its strange name, is well known for its sublime ice cream. The Turkey Hill Experience in Columbia allows visitors to not only learn about how their ice cream is made but also to make their own. Visitors can also star in their own commercials, and if the executives like it, it could very well end up being aired nationally. Of course, there are free samples, too.
Pretty much everyone knows about Hershey Amusement Park. What might surprise some is Lancaster has its own counterpart: the Dutch Wonderland. There are over 35 rides, attractions, and entertainment events for adventurers to explore. The mix of rides will entertain anyone from thrill-seeking adults to timid toddlers. The shows include high-diving acrobatics, musicals, and a storytime corner, which is perfect for winding down young children at the end of a long day.
Even in the heart of Pennsylvania farmland pioneered by Amish and Mennonite communities, the art of making moonshine and craft beer is alive and well. Once hidden during the prohibition era, moonshine distilleries and breweries have made a return. The Tattered Flag Brewery and Still Works, just south of Harrisburg, has won several awards for its gin, vodka, tequila, and craft beer. The Brewery is run by veterans. Tours are available on Saturdays (check online for the schedule).
Hop into a Mountville camper rental, and explore the gently rolling farmlands and lush green woods that Pennsylvania is much loved for.
