Founded by Scottish-Irish immigrants, Mount Joy, Pennsylvania is a historic town that was named after an Irish supply ship, the “Mountjoy”. It comprises what were once three separate towns - Florin, Richland, and Mount Joy - with the latter two identified as separate National Register Historic Districts today.

Mount Joy is clustered with residential buildings and storefronts that date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries while being dotted with leafy parks. It’s this attractive combination of history and green spaces that make it an ideal destination to rent an RV and discover the sights of Lancaster County.

Discover Mount Joy

The Great Outdoors

Park your RV rental near Mount Joy to wander through one of its many green spaces, such as Little Chiques Park which hugs a hairpin in the Little Chiques Creek. Or, you can stretch your legs on one of the walking trails that wind through the Cove Outlook Park, taking you past the park’s butterfly garden, bird sanctuary, and horseshoe pits. Nearby Borough Park is ideal for families, with a creatively designed playground and picnic facilities.

A short drive south of Mount Joy is the Chickies Rock County Park whose name translates from the local Native American language as “place of the crayfish”. It stretches along the eastern bank of the Susquehanna River and is famed for its large quartzite outcrop that offers magnificent views across the region. Take a hike along the 14-mile-long Northwest Lancaster County River Trail while keeping an eye out for the remains of iron furnaces and a historic trolley line that date from the area’s industrial days.

If you’re a keen stargazer, travel across the Susquehanna River to the Samuel S. Lewis State Park, which is dominated by the 885-foot-high peak of Mount Pisgah. It’s a popular destination for groups of astronomical observers after dark, while by day, it attracts kite flyers thanks to its favorable conditions. Hike to the top of the peak for superb views across the surrounding valley or head to the nearby Highpoint Scenic Vista & Recreation Area.
