Mertztown is a census-designated place in Berks County, Pennsylvania. It is also a part of Longswamp Township. The town was founded by a Robert Mertz in 1823 and in 1917, it welcomed Atlas Minerals which moved there and has been there ever since. There were originally two railroad lines that ran through the town, but one was torn up; the other one still exists. The existing line runs through Mertzville and was initially named Reading Railroad. It is now known as Reading Line and is heavily used by Norfolk Southern.

The Great Outdoors

Historic Crystal Cave was discovered in 1871. It is an underground cave where visitors can witness a variety of gem formations within the cave. Guided tours explain the history and geology; visitors are also allowed to pan for gemstones, and there is a hiking trail nearby and a miniature golf course.

Kaercher Creek Park is a developed outdoor recreation area located around a lake which has a boat dock, a launch ramp, and a fishing dock. Guests can fish from the dock or out on the water for a variety of species (the lake is stocked by the Pennsylvania Fish Commission). Within the park there is a lodge and picnic pavilion; it has a children's play area, volleyball and sand volleyball courts, a horseshoe pitch, and more. Interpretative programs are provided so visitors can learn more about the lake and the wildlife found there. Park your Mertztown camper rental nearby, and you will have a perfect photography blind for capturing the park and the birds in it.

The Pinnacle is located on Blue Mountain and is a popular hiking destination. The mountain is crisscrossed with trails leading to the Pinnacle which is the second highest destination in Berks County. There are stretches on the trail that are rocky and appropriate footwear should be worn; water is strongly advised, and hikers should be aware and cautious of snakes.

Sacony Family Campground is a seasonal RV park open from April to October each year. Sites can be rented by the day, week, or month. Some of the sites include water and electrical hookups, others have no hookups, and there is a dumping facility. Exploring The City

There is lots to see and do in Mertzville, starting with the local wineries and vineyards. One of them is family owned and operated, and has been in the family for two decades. There is a historic one-room schoolhouse built in 1893 and closed in 1956; it was the last single-room schoolhouse in the county. There is an outdoor tour company that conducts bicycle tours of the county and the state. Don't forget in the midst of all this fun to take your Mertztown motorhome rental for a spin on the local highways; this is an important part of RV vacations and is an experience you shouldn't miss.

When it's time for dinner, Mertztown answers the call. One of the local pub restaurants has separate bar and dining room areas; guests in the dining room can watch birds attending to the bird feeders outside the windows. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. A nearby Mediterranean restaurant is located in a strip mall, but this should not be a concern. The food is authentic, well prepared and uses fresh ingredients. Portions are large; diners eating here should try the smokey flavored baba ghanoush. Don't be surprised if you wind up taking the leftovers home to your Mertztown luxury RV rental for a late-night snack. Vacations weren't made for diets or routines, and there is nothing quite as tasty as finishing a delicious meal under a star-filled sky when and where you want to.
