Named after the wives of two settlers, Marietta, Pennsylvania, sprawls along the north bank of the Susquehanna River near the town of Columbia. It’s clustered with historic buildings that date back to its early-19th-century days when it was a hub for timber and iron smelting while being surrounded by recreational parks and reserves.

With its riverside setting and laid-back ambiance, Marietta is an attractive destination to rent an RV and base yourself to explore everything Lancaster County has to offer.

Discover Marietta

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Marietta and head to the Chickies Rock County Park, which lies on the eastern bank of the Susquehanna River. Its name translates from the local Native American language as “place of the crayfish” and it’s renowned for its massive quartzite outcrop that offers superb views across the region. In addition to being scattered with the remains of iron furnaces and a trolley line from its industrial days, the park is traversed by the 14-mile-long Northwest Lancaster County River Trail.

Another destination where you can stretch your legs is the Lancaster County Central Park, which encompasses 544 acres on the edge of Lancaster. This multi-use recreational space features hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, as well as a swimming pool and a skate park. Green thumbs shouldn’t miss a visit to the Garden of Five Senses while those who are interested in the native wildlife and plants of the region can stop in at the park’s Environmental Center.

If you’re a keen kite flyer, be sure to visit the Samuel S Lewis State Park, which centers around the 885-foot-high peak of Mount Pisgah. It’s a popular spot for local kite flying clubs to gather thanks to its ideal conditions while also offering spectacular views of the Susquehanna River Valley. Once the sun goes down, Mount Pisgah becomes a gathering place for stargazing enthusiasts, with regular astronomical observation events held here.

RV Parks

After picking up your motorhome rental in Marietta, drive north to the Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA, which caters to big rigs up to 100 feet in length. There are an outdoor swimming pool and miniature golf course on site, as well as complimentary cable TV and Wi-Fi connections.

Or, you can head east to the Circle M RV & Camping Resort, a western-themed campground on the southern edge of Lancaster. It’s well equipped for families, with a swimming pool, miniature golf course, and regular activities for kids, as well as offering laundry facilities and a hot tub.

A short drive across the Susquehanna River takes you to the Ben Franklin RV Park in York. It has 35 full hookup sites and 10 water/electric sites (all of which offer up to 50 amp electric service), as well as a laundry room, a clubhouse, and its very own waterfall.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Marietta and set out to explore on foot, beginning with a wander through the “Ironmasters' Hill" area, which is home to five historic residences that are associated with 19th-century ironmasters. Admire the stately brick facade of the heritage-listed Ashley and Bailey Silk Mill, as well as the charming Joseph Bucher House, which was designed in a Georgian style. The Marietta Historic District includes 373 buildings that dot the town center and surrounding residential areas, with other highlights including the Old Town Hall, the Marietta Theater, and the English Presbyterian Church.

Another historical destination not to miss in the area is the National Watch and Clock Museum, which is dedicated to the history, science, and art of timekeeping. Learn about the world’s very first non-mechanical timekeeping devices such as hour-glasses and sundials, then browse the more than 12,000 clocks and watches that comprise the museum’s collection. Discover the mechanics behind the pendulum and see beautifully designed American grandfather clocks, then witness the famous 19th-century Engel Clock.

Part way between Marietta and Columbia lies the Turkey Hill Experience, which offers a fascinating insight into the daily operations of the Turkey Hill Dairy. Get behind the wheel of a vintage milk truck or try your hand at milking mechanical cows, then create your very own virtual ice cream flavor. If sampling unlimited ice cream isn’t your thing, you can learn about teas from around the world as part of a Tea Discovery Class.

Marietta is home to supermarkets where you can stock up on supplies and also has a good selection of eateries, as well as gas stations if you need to fill up your Marietta RV rental. It’s also just a short drive from Columbia where you’ll find more shopping options or 25 minutes from Lancaster.

Whether you’re visiting Lancaster County for its historic architecture or recreational parks, book an RV in Marietta and embark on your next adventure.
