Originally a major settlement for the Lenape Indians who had occupied the area for thousands of years, a trading post was established at Marcus Hook by Swedish colonists in the 1640s. The Swede’s originally called the settlement Chammassungh, but it was renamed after Dutch settlers conquered the area in 1655. By the 1699, the colony was taken over by English colonists and the community began to prosper.

Of course, a flourishing settlement also attracted the more unsavory type, and Marcus Hook became a haven for pirates. One local folk tale claims that Marcus Hook Plank House was the home of the mistress of the infamous pirate Blackbeard. Rent an RV in Marcus Hook, PA, and you’ll end up in the center of Americas pirate history.
