The Great Outdoors

You can start your vacation with a visit to John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum. On the banks of Darby Creek but just minutes from Philadelphia International Airport, this is one of America’s first urban wildlife reserves and a hotspot for bird watching. Over 80 species of bird have been seen nesting in this freshwater marshland, and over 300 species have been observed in the refuge during migration seasons. Many types of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians also occupy this marshy habitat. Visitors can discover the area on land, using the 10-mile network of nature trails, or paddle a canoe or kayak along a 4.5-mile section of Darby Creek.

Ridley Creek State Park is one of the most well-known outdoor areas in Delaware County. Northwest of Lansdowne and just a short drive from Philadelphia, it’s a popular picnicking area for city dwellers. The park is also a fantastic place to get involved in recreational activities throughout the year. There are multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, many of which are suitable for cross country skiing during the snowy season. The 2,600-acre area is also home to a wide variety of native and non-native tree types, some dating back to colonial times. Plus, the park is home to wildlife species such as songbirds, white-tailed deer, and great blue heron.

Before returning to town, you can make a short excursion to Crum Woods in Swarthmore. The 200-acre biologically diverse woodland is one of the few forests which can still be found in Delaware County. It was originally inhabited by native Lenni Lenape and later became a European settlement. In the early 1900s, over 60,000 native trees were replanted in Crum Woods, and visitors can now enjoy this thriving woodland using 3.5 miles of easy walking trails.
