Overlooking the Juniata River, Huntingdon serves as the seat of Huntingdon County in the center of Pennsylvania. It is believed to have been named after the English town and was first settled by Rev. Dr. William Smith in the mid-18th century. It lies along the main line of the Norfolk Southern Railway and is a regular stop on the passenger service that connects Harrisburg with Pittsburgh.

Huntingdon’s heritage-listed historic district combined with its proximity to Raystown Lake make it a popular place to rent an RV in Huntington County. There are plenty of family-friendly campgrounds where you can base yourself while exploring the caves, ghost towns, and recreational reserves of this attractive region.

Discover Huntingdon

The Great Outdoors

Book a travel trailer rental in Huntingdon and make the short drive south to the Raystown Lake Recreation Area, which is the largest lake entirely within the state borders of Pennsylvania. It’s a hub for fishing, hiking, and swimming, with 12 different public access areas around its 8,000-acre body of water. Spend your days canoeing along the shores or cast a line to see what’s biting, with concerts regularly held here during the summer months.

The Raystown Lake Recreation Area lies adjacent to the Terrace Mountain Wildlife Management Area, which is traversed by the 27-mile-long Terrace Mountain Trail. It can be accessed from Weaver Falls or the Lake Raystown Resort, with primitive camping possible at designated locations along the multi-day trail. It follows an old logging road before ascending the wooded slopes of Terrace Mountain, taking you through oak and maple forests, as well as meadows ignited by spring wildflowers.

Around an hour’s drive east of Huntingdon lies the Tuscarora State Park, which is named for the Tuscarora Indians who once inhabited the area. It’s another popular hiking destination, with a former logging road ascending to the summit of Locust Mountain for incredible views across southern Pennsylvania. If fishing’s more your thing, Tuscarora Lake at the center of the park is stocked with bass, yellow perch, and trout, with numerous fishing locations dotting its shores.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Huntingdon and stroll through the Huntingdon Borough Historic District, which includes more than 500 buildings in the CBD and surrounding residential areas. Admire the Federal, Italianate and Queen Anne style residences, most of which date from the late-18th to early 20th centuries. Notable buildings include the former Fisher and McMurtie’s Store that dates to 1850 and the Port Building from 1875, as well as the County Jail, which was established in 1829.

If you’re interested in the history of Huntingdon County, make the short drive north to the Greenwood Furnace State Park, which encompasses the remains of a historic iron-making center. Today, you can wander through the ghost town of Greenwood and explore Greenwood Lake, which was built during the 19th century to supply water to the settlement’s gristmill.

A short drive northwest of Huntingdon takes you to the Lincoln Caverns, which were discovered by work crews blasting the mountain in 1930. Join an hour-long guided tour through the various caverns while discovering how they were formed and the features that are visible. Witness the 110-foot-high “Frozen Niagara” that resembles this famous waterfall, then walk to the cavern of Whisper Rocks to see its impressive “Cathedral” room.
