Hummelstown is a borough in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania that started as a village named Fredrickstown in 1762. In its early days, the town relied on the Union Canal to promote trade and transportation, which helped its economy to grow. Its location has also helped it to become a frequent stopover for tourists heading to Harrisburg or Hershey. The town has frequently hosted Calder Cup ceremonies over the years. Several of the town's first and still existing buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is one of the audiences for a long list of AM and FM radio stations that originate nearby. The town's list of famous current or former citizens is a long one and includes Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and actress Terry Farrell who is best known for her role as Jadzia Dax on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Search for an RV in Dauphin County, and you will be well prepared to begin your adventure in this historic and cultural wonderland. There are a few other towns that are worth spending some time exploring. Dauphin (city, not county) has been a bedroom community for residents of Harrisburg for several decades. Grantville is home to Memorial Lake State Park, which is human-made and was constructed by the Army Core of Engineers. Cornwall has an iron mine that was mined continuously for 236 years, from 1737 until 1973. Elizabethtown is often referred to, along with its high school and college, as “E-Town.” Carlisle is home to the U.S. Army War College which instructs high ranking military personnel and civilians, and to the United States Army Heritage and Education Center, a publicly accessible museum complex and archive. Your Hummelstown travel trailer rental is how you will experience the culture and history of the area in comfort and style.

The Great Outdoors

Bald Eagle State Forest is characterized by pristine mountain streams, old-growth forest, sandstone ridges, and additional features. It also contains numerous watersheds. The park and forests are undeveloped, and the forests are managed for water purity, scenic beauty, natural habitats, and sustainable timber and natural gas resources. Visitors are allowed to go hiking and mountain bike riding, camping and picnicking, hunting and fishing, and other activities.

Tuscarora State Forest consists of narrow valleys and steep ridges that are fertile and well-watered, making them prime growth sites for majestic oak and hemlock tree stands. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe deer, gypsy moth, and many other inhabitants; activities allowed within the park are camping and picnicking, hiking and mountain biking, just to name a few.

Michaux State Forest is named after the French botanist Andre Michaux and is considered the “cradle of forestry” due to its being host to the first Pennsylvanian forestry school, Mont Alto. Most of the forest land is located at the northern terminus of the Blue Mountains, on South Mountain which is made of metavolcanic and quartzite rocks. Visitors can hike the park trails which are a part of the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail or explore the park by road in their Hummelstown camper rental; the roads are mostly paved level gravel, and part of the roadway is a self-guided tour with random interpretive stations.

RV Parks

Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday is a cultivated RV park with lots of trees and grass, a swimming pool, a mini-golf course, and more. There is a camp store where propane and firewood can be purchased, a dog park, a laundromat, and other facilities. Sites have electrical outlets, and some have pull-through access.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to see and do in Hummelstown, starting with the museums. One of them showcases restored antique cars from the period 1890 to 1980. The exhibits are set up to resemble lifelike scenes from a cross-country road trip. Another museum commemorates the Civil War with exhibits set up in a fashion to visually tell the story of what happened. There is an old-fashioned circus with trained animals and a natural limestone cave that is much cooler than the afternoon outside. Trained guides explain the history and geology of the site, and there is a gift shop, a playground, and a picnic area. If you haven't already, don't forget to take your Hummelstown motorhome rental for a spin on the local highways. This is one of the things that makes RV vacations unique and perhaps the most important one.

When it's time for dinner, Hummelstown is a good place to be with its wide array of choices. There are a few national chains on hand, but most of the venues are locally owned and operated, using produce and materials straight from the nearby farms. One local cafe is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; the dining room is small and simply decorated but has a nice ambiance. Its breakfast is all day, which is always a treat to find, and it has pizza by the slice or whole pie, plus an extensive list of ice cream flavors on hand. There is always an option for takeout if the dining room is busy; grab something and head back to your Hummelstown luxury RV rental to enjoy your meal under a warm afternoon sun or star-filled night sky. The choice is yours.
