Originally inhabited by the Lenape tribe, local lore says that a native once dropped an object in a freshwater spring in the area, and it emerged in a different spring over 3 miles away. Holicong, PA was a part of the Charter awarded to William Penn in late 1600s, and later sold in parcels to farmers, miners, and other settlers. Settlers and Lenape natives co-existed in Holicong for a few decades until an influx of settlers and the Revolutionary War drove the natives out of the area in late 1770s.

One of the original homes, a charming fieldstone house built in 1740s, is still standing today. The aptly named Stone Manor House and the Stone Bank Barn (built in 19th century) was briefly owned by playwright George S. Kaufman, who won the Pulitzer Prize twice for Drama. Today, the Stone Manor House is operated as a bed and breakfast inn.

The closest large town is Doylestown, about five miles west.

The Great Outdoors

You likely want to use your RV rental to hit a number of nearby parks for outdoor recreation, right? This part of Pennsylvania has several state parks, including game lands, that are great for hiking and exploring. Within a few minutes’ drive is the Peace Valley Park, which encompasses Lake Galena (also known as Peace Valley Reservoir). There are over 15 miles of trails. Herds of deer make their home in this park, and muskrat and otter dens are easily found in small ponds and the lake itself. Nonmotorized boats, kayaks, and canoes are permitted, and the park rents out canoes to visitors, too. Anglers can catch largemouth bass, channel catfish, and sunfish in the lake.

Nockamixon State Park offers even more recreational fun. Combined with the adjacent game land, the 10,000-acre park has over 30 miles of trails that wind through mature groves and airy meadows. Bring your horses! The trails are multi-use, and there are plenty of parking for trailers. There are stables in the area that rent horses out for trail riding, too. The warm-water lake all but churns with smallmouth, largemouth, and striped hybrid bass. Fishermen rarely have a bad day at the Nockamixon Lake. If you want to try your hand at angling, the park lends out rods.

During the hunting seasons, gun-hunting, archery, and trapping of small game and deer are permitted. You can also train your dogs to hunt in the adjacent state game land, though it’s highly recommended that your dogs wear blaze orange at all times. There are local dog trainers providing workshops, instructing you and your dogs on how to point and search for game. Bring your Holicong motorhome rental and enjoy the wilderness from the comforts of your temporary home.

RV Parks

When you book a travel trailer rental in Holicong, you’ll need someplace to park it overnight while you hit the sack. There are a handful of RV parks and campgrounds in the area; most are near Nockamixon. The Little Red Barn, a family-oriented campground, offers amenities like full hookups, a fire ring at each site, pool, laundry and restroom facilities, and free WiFi. Note: this campground is open only during the summer months from late spring till mid-fall.

Tohickon Family Campgrounds in Quakertown may be a good candidate, too. In addition to the usual full hookups, they have an on-site general store, which is handy for replenishing small necessities. Most lots have creek access. Step out your door and catch a string of fish for breakfast.

Exploring the City

Because Holicong is a tiny town, it might be tempting to think there’s nothing to do around here. On the contrary! Hop into your Holicong luxury motorhome rental and go exploring. Holicong’s historic district, which encompasses most of the town, consists of 18 charming buildings, mostly in Georgian style. Several homes and buildings in the surrounding towns are also on the National Register of Historic Homes, including Doylestown and Wycombe, many of which date back to the Revolutionary War times.

Doylestown is well known for its quirky Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle. The original owner, Henry Mercer, was an eccentric millionaire. He built the castle and two buildings out of solid concrete, which was thought to be an impossible feat at the time because he was concerned about his home burning down in a fire. Obsessed with tiles often found decorating fireplace mantels, he devoted several halls to displaying exquisite tile work. A vast collection of art paintings and prints also decorate several halls. Both facilities offer tours throughout the year.

Grapes thrive in this part of Pennsylvania due to its mild, occasionally humid climate. The family-business Buckingham Valley Winery is one of the oldest in the area, established in 1960s. There is a tasting room at the vineyard. Guided tours about the process of making wines and this vineyard’s history are available with reservations.

If wines aren’t your cup of tea, try one of the local brewery companies. Craft beer is a time-honored tradition in Pennsylvania. Many brewmasters, working with local farms to create “farm-to-glass” products, have set up camps in this area. The Bucks County Brewery, based in Pipersville, has a variety of beer, ales, and IPAs sure to delight the most discerning palate.

Should it be the gentle rolling countryside and deep woods of Pennsylvania you are seeking, consider a camper rental in Holisong. Watch a sunrise, sit by the campfire, and enjoy the beautiful landscape. Rent a motorhome in Holisong, PA and enjoy the outdoors!
