Settled by Welsh Quakers in 1682, the town was originally known as Merion Square. Variations of “Merion” were already used in several locations, and though it’s unknown exactly when this occurred, the town changed its name to Gladwyne to avoid confusion. Even though the name vaguely sounds Welsh, it is gibberish.

The construction of the King of Prussia mall and the Schuylkill Expressway (also known as Interstate 76) in the 1960s greatly improved the town’s appeal, and it grew by leaps and bounds. Today, it’s considered one of the more upscale suburban neighborhoods, though the heart of Gladwyne, the intersection of Youngsford and Righters Mill roads, still retains its historic appeal.

One of its most notable residents is M. Night Shyamalan, a highly regarded film director who has produced several Hollywood movies.

The closest large town is Philadelphia, a hair over 12 miles southeast of the city.

The Great Outdoors

A common reason to book an RV rental is to go out and explore the outdoors. Although this corner of Pennsylvania is very suburban, there are several pockets of wilderness nearby. Wissahickon is a narrow, jagged-looking park, and yet, it has over 50 miles of trails through ravines and gorges. Explore dense woods, bright, airy meadows, and follow the winding creeks. Wissahickon Creek is stocked with trouts in springs, and bass and sunfish also swim in the creek. Over 200 species of birds visit this park annually. Opossums, deer, red foxes, turtles, and many other amphibians and reptiles are regularly sighted in this little park.

Bridlewild Trail, which was originally used for fox-hunting in late 1800s, was officially established as a hiking trail. Set in picturesque woods, the trail extends nearly 30 miles, passing through the Henry, Rolling Hill, Idlewild Farms, Saunder Woods, and other spaces. Leashed pets and horses are permitted.

For more room and solitude, head out of town. Near Elverson, the French Creek State Park and the surrounding parks collectively makes over 70,000 acres of wilderness. Hike, bike, horseback ride, and more. Bring your Gladwyne camper rental and enjoy "glamping."

RV Parks

When renting a motorhome from Gladwyne, don’t forget to find a place to park overnight. This close to Philadelphia, options are limited. The closest option is the KOA in West Chester. In addition to full hookups for your RV, it’s very family friendly and has a number of fun activities for both children and adults alike. Hike, fish, go foraging for precious gems and fossils, and more.

Brandywine Creek Campgrounds in Lyndell may be a good candidate as well. Offering full RV hookups, the site is in the heart of the picturesque Brandywine Valley, not far from the Pennsylvania Dutch and Amish regions.

Exploring the City

Even in the ‘burbs, it’s hard to escape history. Several homes in Gladwyne and surrounding towns are historic dating back to the founding of this nation. Rent a motorhome in Gladwyne and go check them out. Gladwyne was quick to establish rules preventing overdevelopment, and as a result, the area has an eclectic mix of woods, farms, Victorian-, Queen Anne-, and Tudor-style homes. Several homes, particularly in the downtown area, are historic, and have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a result. One of the oldest homes in town is the John Roberts’ log cabin, built in 1690, though because the owners added onto the original structure over the years, little of the original cabin is visible from the outside.

Philadelphia is a hotspot of landmarks and historic structures, sure to delight history buffs and explorers. All the notable spots, like the Franklin Institute, National Constitution Center, Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, Tomb of Unknown Soldier, and Museum of American Revolution are within blocks of each others.

The city isn’t all about history, though. There’s also fantastic food -- especially the Philly Cheesesteaks and the lesser-known-but-divine roast pork sandwich. The local music scene never fails to get the crowds’ toes a-tapping. There are several hole-in-the-wall clubs featuring up-and-coming comedians and entertainers. Dozens of art museums and galleries line the cobblestone streets, displaying artworks of well-known painters like Diego Rivera, Vincent Van Gogh, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Check out the Phillies’ home games at the Citizens Bank Park. The ballpark also has a 13,000-square-foot interactive baseball experience called The Yard for kids. This experience is designed to imitate the real field, and kids can launch hotdogs at targets or practice their windup pitches and try setting the speed record. The facility offers a behind-the-scenes tour, treating guests to a wealth of information about the team and the history of the ballpark. Tour stops include the dugout, the Diamond Club, the broadcast room, and the Hall of Fame Club.

Philadelphia will appeal to history buffs, adventurers, and explorers. Rent a motorhome in Gladwyne and have a ball!
