In early 1950s, prefabricated homes were all the rage, and Fairless Hills was one of the first prefab communities created in the Philadelphia metro area. U.S. Steel, which had a manufacturing facility nearby, financed the Fairless Hills development, and the community was named after its president, Benjamin Fairless. These homes were built by Gunnison Magic Homes, a subsidiary of U.S. Steel, and they were reasonably priced and well built (compared with today’s prefab homes).
Though most homes in Fairless Hills are modern, having been built in mid-century, there are a few homes and structures that date back to early 1700s. Built by the settlers, one such example is the Sotcher Farmhouse, also known as Three Arches, which was built in 1712. The home, like many others in the area, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The closest large town is Levittown, about three miles to south.
One of the many reasons to rent a camper rental in Fairless Hills is to explore the outdoors for fun and adventures. There are several parks in the area, offering a huge array of activities. The closest park, Core Creek Park, is a small 1,3000-acre park with a lake. In addition to an off-leash dog area and a few miles of hiking trails, Lake Luxembourg is popular with local fishermen. Anglers can catch fish like largemouth bass, carp, and a few others. If you’re not experienced with nonmotorized boats, the park offers kayaking and canoeing lessons. They also rent out kayaks, canoes, rowboats, paddleboats, and aqua cycles.
Tyler State Park, also very close to the city, was once farmland. It’s slowly transforming back into woodlands, though remnants of mills, houses, and barns can still be seen. One of the famous Pennsylvania covered bridges, which crosses the Neshaminy Creek, is still standing. Hike, bike, and horseback ride in this park. Boating is permitted, though because the creek is shallow, it’s recommended that canoes and kayaks are used. Anglers, catch black crappie, smallmouth bass, carp, and panfish. Brave the cold for winter fun and venture outdoor for cross-country skiing, ice skating, and sledding. Although this park is day-use, there’s plenty of parking for your RV rental.
Across the Delaware River, the Assunpink Wildlife Management Park in Allentown, NJ, is a fun little park to explore. Clocking in at nearly 7,000 acres, Assunpink is a stopover for migratory waterfowls and a haven for the local wildlife. Miles of trails offer plenty of horseback riding, hiking, and bicycling opportunities. The three lakes on the grounds are excellent for photography, fishing and, when seasonally appropriate, waterfowl hunting. Note that you need permits for boats. There is also an open field where flying RCs and drones are allowed.
When you rent a camper trailer in Fairless Hills, you’ll need someplace to call home for a few days while you explore this corner of Pennsylvania. Due to covenants in place, there aren’t many campgrounds in the immediate area.
The closest option is Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort. The resort is a type of a vacation timeshare in which RV lots are individually owned. However, most lots are available for short-term rentals. Minutes away from Six Flags, this campground bills itself as a luxury resort.
Timberland Lake Campground, also in Jackson, NJ, may be a good alternative. They include amenities like an Olympic-sized pool, 50 amps, and access to a private lake for fishing and boating, and free hot showers.
This close to Philadelphia, there’s plenty of places to see. In addition to the usual historic hotspots, check out the Styer Orchard in Langhorne. One of the few remaining farms in the area, visitors can pick their own fruits and vegetables. There’s nothing like sun-warmed blackberries just plucked off the vine. Depending on the season and weather, they have a selection of strawberries, plums, peaches, apples, tomatoes, squashes, and pumpkins.
