Although there were farmers and settlers in the area as far back as early 1700s, Devon is unique in that the town was one of the earliest planned residential developments on known records. A pair of entrepreneurs, Lemuel Coffin and Joseph Altemus, purchased several farms in 1881, and announced that they planned to create a community of “large and handsome country residences.” The town would be named after a local railroad station, which was the Devon Station.

Today, Devon is best known for the Devon Horse Show, which is the largest and oldest multi-breed competition in USA. The horse show has been held annually since 1892, usually in late spring. All proceeds go toward the Bryn Mawr Hospital, a not-for-profit community-based health organization. Since early 1970s, the horse show has contributed over $10 million to the hospital.

The closest large town is Wayne a little over three miles east.

The Great Outdoors

Even in the outskirts of Philadelphia, there are several wilderness parks and preserves in the area. Wissahickon is a local favorite. Sheltered in a valley, the sounds of the nearby city are muffled to a dim, faint, murmur. Birds are clear and loud, and Wissahickon Creek babbles as it bounces its way through the woods. Near the point where the Gorgas Creek merges with Wissahickon, there is a local legend that a deep, vast cave winds its way into the heart of Philadelphia underground. If anyone knows where the entrance is, it’s a well-kept secret.

This park welcomes both bikers and horseback riders, though they are limited to specific trails. Bring your luxury motorhome rental from Devon as parking is plentiful.

Nearby Ridley Creek State Park is another popular destination for both locals and out-of-town visitors alike. Clocking in at nearly 3,000 acres, this day-use park has several miles of hiking and biking trails. Fishermen are often spotted standing at the banks and in the creek water itself, casting for trout. Archery-hunting deer is permitted during the established seasons, though this is strictly regulated. Deer, foxes, raccoons, and other birds and waterfowls are frequently sighted. Any nature photographer will enjoy this park.

RV Parks

When you rent a travel trailer from Devon, be sure to consider where you’ll park overnight. Due to the covenants in the area, facilities that allow RVs are few and far in between. The closest campground is the West Chester KOA in Coatesville. It has a number of fun activities and features, like a bubble trampoline, a gem mine in which guests can search for precious gems, and swimming pools.

A few minutes further west, the New Holland KOA is more centrally located between Philadelphia and Lancaster. An award-winning facility, this KOA can accommodate rigs up to 90’ and has a fun playground, which includes an oversized checkerboard. This would be a great place to park your Devon motorhome rental as you explore the great outdoors.

Exploring the City

When you jump into your Devon travel trailer rental and head towards Philadelphia, don’t be dazzled by the bright lights and overlook the local attractions. Jenkins Arboretum showcases a collection of rare, stunning rhododendrons, azaleas, and other trees, including the elusive Kalmias, a type of a mountain laurel.

Gnarly air, man! There are a handful of skate parks in the area. The Radnor skatepark was designed to suit skateboarders, in-line skaters, and BMX freestyle bikers. It has an array of obstacles for both novices and intermediate riders, including ramps, grind boxes, and a fly box.

The American Helicopter Museum in West Chester is a multi-sensory experience in which visitors can experience the wonders of “vertical flight.” Learn about the helicopters used by local emergency air-rescue services and military, and check out some of the more quirky designs, like the combination helicopter-plane, the McCulloch Gyroplane, and aerovelo atlas, the first human-powered helicopter. Occasionally the museum’s staff will take visitors on helicopter rides, too! (Check online for the schedule and pricing).

No visit to Devon is complete without a stop at the quintessential Valley Forge National Historical Park. The gentle, green rolling hills and serene location is the site of General Washington’s winter encampment in 1777-78. The highly trained history guides detail the struggles that the soldiers endured: one of the harshest winters on record, starvation, disease, and low morale. Hundreds of men perished for this country’s future.

The art of making beer and ale is an old tradition, dating back to the founding of this nation. Wrap up a long day of sightseeing and adventure by kicking back at one of the local pubs. The Black Powder Tavern, found in a 1746 building, has a selection of locally-made craft beer, ales, and IPAS, including several local favorites like the Yards Brewing and Fat Head’s Brewery.

If it's a taste of Pennsylvania history you are seeking, consider a luxury motorhome rental in Devon. Explore a brewery, hike a trail, and take in the outstanding landscape. Rent an RV in Devon, PA and roam the Pennsylvania backwoods.
