Clustered along a branch of the Schuylkill River, Cressona, Pennsylvania is a historic town that was named after its founder John Chapman Cresson. He was President of the Mine Hill and Schuylkill Haven Railroad, which transformed the region from an area of wilderness to a bustling settlement in the 1830s. Historically known as West Haven, its name was changed to Cressona and officially incorporated in 1857.

Today, Cressona is a laid-back destination to rent an RV while exploring the sights and attractions of Schuylkill County. It’s within easy access of family-friendly RV campgrounds and recreational reserves, as well as historic architecture and one of the United States’ most impressive miniature villages.

Discover Cressona

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Cressona and drive north to the Locust Lake State Park, which is a popular local fishing destination. Its sprawling lake is home to a variety of bass, pickerel, and panfish while brown and brook trout are regularly stocked throughout the year. Aside from boating, kayaking, and canoeing, there’s also a swimming area where you can cool off and numerous hiking trails along the lake shores.

Alternatively, you can head southwest to the Swatara State Park, which encompasses more than 3,000 acres of rolling fields and bird-filled woodlands. Nestled between the Second and Blue Mountains, you can go kayaking or canoeing along the Swatara Creek or embark on a section of the legendary Appalachian Trail. The Swatara State Park is also home to the Swatara Rail Trail, a 10-mile-long route that takes you past the remains of the historic Union Canal and sections of the Reading Railroad.

Cressona is also on the doorstep of the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, which is a must-see destination for bird lovers. Hawks, eagles, and falcons are regularly sighted here along the Appalachian Flyway, with the sanctuary acting as both a research hub and a conservation training site. It’s a great place to learn about birds of prey before following the Lookout Trail to the various raptor viewing sites that are located along the ridge of Hawk Mountain.

RV Parks

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Cressona and drive west to the Twin Grove RV Resort & Cottages. Aside from their offering of full hookup sites, there are two pools with waterslides, a mini-golf course, and a fitness center, not to mention an on-site restaurant if you want a break from cooking.

Slightly farther west is the Jonestown / Hershey NE KOA Journey, which could be a good option for RVers traveling with big rigs. Book one of their level pull-through sites with full hookups and take advantage of the recreational pursuits on offer. Aside from hiking and biking trails in the adjacent Swatara State Park, the campground is located next to the Swatara Creek where you can canoe, fish and swim.

Just to the south of Cressona is the Mountain Springs Camping Resort, which features more than 290 RV sites. Select from their fully-shaded, back-in and pull-through sites, then enjoy access to the outdoor pool, children’s playground, basketball and volleyball courts.

Exploring the City

Pick up your RV rental near Cressona and make the 10-minute drive north to Pottsville, which is home to the oldest operating brewing company in the United States, D. G. Yuengling & Son. Join a guided tour to learn about the beers that were once produced here, then stop in at the Jewish Museum of Eastern Pennsylvania. Pottsville is also home to Jerry's Classic Cars & Collectibles where you can browse a range of vintage vehicles and step inside a 1960's soda shop.

Cressona is also an easy day trip from Pine Grove and its Historic District, which includes more than 200 buildings that date from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Admire the elegant two-story residences and commercial buildings that have been beautifully restored, then stop by the town’s heritage-listed school. Pine Grove is also home to a restored portion of the Union Canal that played a vital role in the economy of southeastern Pennsylvania during the 19th century.

Don’t miss a visit to Roadside America, an incredible miniature village and model railway that extends over 8,000 square feet in an old dance hall in Shartlesville. It was created by Laurence Gieringer in 1935 at his home in Hamburg before being moved to a local amusement park in 1938. It features a fully landscaped village with more than 300 buildings and 4,000 miniature people, as well as up to 18 "O" gauge trains, trolleys, and cable cars.

Cressona is home to a small supermarket where you can stock up on groceries and a couple of restaurants if you want to dine out. There is also a gas station if you want to fill up your motorhome rental in Cressona, or you can make the 15-minute drive into Saint Clair where there’s a more extensive choice of stores.
