Book an RV rental in Biglerville and drive west to the Michaux State Forest, which sprawls across 85,000 acres over various tracts. It’s named after a French botanist who was responsible for gathering plants at the request of King Louis XVI and was once home to numerous charcoal kilns where grassy meadows exist today. Explore one of the mountain biking trails that traverse the woodlands or embark on a section of the famous Appalachian Trail that extends through the reserve’s borders.
The Michaux State Forest is located adjacent to the Caledonia State Park that’s named for the Caledonia Furnace that was established here in the 1830s. It’s also home to part of Appalachian Trail, as well as an old iron furnace millrace that can be accessed along the Ramble Trail. If you’re visiting during the summer months, check to see what’s showing at the Totem Pole Playhouse, a famous theater that’s located within the park’s bounds.
