Ardmore may not sound familiar when you first hear the name. But this suburb on the west side of Philadelphia borders fun little towns and is near exciting cities that you can easily drive to. Plus, Ardmore offers a good amount of its own amenities, as it is shared by two large counties, Delaware and Montgomery.

While you can rent an RV and drive it all around the two counties and beyond, you can opt to settle down in an RV park and hop on a train headed elsewhere. Ardmore has its own railroad station that’ll take you anywhere you want to go. Get to know where you’re staying, but don’t forget to explore the surrounding area.

The Great Outdoors

During a summer trip, head to Ardmore’s public pool, or if it’s winter, the ice-skating rink. To take some air, you can picnic or stroll through Linwood Park or Wynnewood Park in Penn Wynne. For a park with more to do, go to Ardmore’s neighbor, Gladwyne. With a creek, mill, and housing ruins, Rolling Hill Park is a great place to stop and spend some time in. Only a few miles out of town, in Havertown, is the Lawrence Cabin, a Swedish log cabin from the 1600s. Right nearby is Nitre Hall, a building built in the 1800s on the banks of Cobb Creek. The tree-lined creek, which runs through Lansdowne borough, offers a walking trail that leads to the historic Bartram’s Garden and the John Heinz Wildlife Refuge.

If you end up traveling around the local cities, a little over a half hour drive away are the world-famous Longwood Gardens, a botanical garden that is seemingly endless, with over 1,077 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows to stroll through. It is in the middle of lush Brandywine Valley in Chester County. WIth 11,000 varieties of plants spread around the property, a historical house where the famous du Ponts once lived, and a 62-bell carillon tower, you won’t run out of things to do or see at Longwood for many hours. For the children, there are also treehouses they can climb into and play in.

Some out-of-state excursions are an even shorter drive away. About a 15-mile distance from Ardmore in Camden, New Jersey is the Adventure Aquarium where you can swim with sharks or pet stingrays. Also in Camden is the USS New Jersey Battleship. Head to the preserved ship with the entire family and explore above and below deck. There is a walking tour offered that takes you to multiple decks and key locations, with guides who fill you in on naval history.
