A part of the land granted to William Penn in the Charter that eventually formed the State of Pennsylvania, Mr. Wetherill purchased the land in mid-1700s and built a few large mills on the Perkiomen Creek. The town name, Arcola, is an anagram of the Wetherill’s mills’ names, which mainly produced cotton yarn and fabric.

Local lore says that a property in Arcola was a safehouse stop, also referred to as a “way station,” on the Underground Railroad, transporting slaves from the South during the 1850s and 1860s. Arcola is almost a ‘one-horse’ town, though its proximity to Philadelphia and a number of fun and historic attractions makes it an ideal place to visit. There are several wilderness parks nearby, also.

The closest large town is Norristown, just under seven miles to the southeast.

Discover Arcola

The Great Outdoors

One of the main reasons to rent an RV is to hit the outdoors for fresh air and adventure galore. There are several pockets of wildernesses in the area. The Perkiomen Trail parallels the winding Perkiomen Creek (affectionately known as Perky to the locals) for 20 miles, connecting the Schuylkill (pronounced as SHOO-kill) River Trail to the Audubon Loop. The trail is laid over the old Reading (pronounced as RED-ding) Railroad. Biking, horseback riding, and in winters, cross-country skiing are all permitted on this trail.

Evansburg State Park, a day-use park, was once primarily farmlands, and mills dotted the curves of the Skippack Creek. The Pennsylvania forests are slowly taking back the fields, though wild meadows dot the area. Hike, bike, and horseback ride. Search for artifacts from a bygone era of 300 years ago. During appropriate seasons, hunting and trapping of small game are allowed, though you must obtain permits. The Skippack Creek, which is a popular waterway with the local fishermen, has plenty of warm water fish, such as smallmouth bass, catfish, carp, panfish, and brown and rainbow trout. Book a motorhome in Arcola and go exploring!

RV Parks

Don’t forget to figure out where to stay overnight when you rent a camper in Arcola. This close to Philadelphia, options are few. The KOA in West Chester is adjacent to the Brandywine Creek, making it very easy to catch a string of fish for breakfast or dinner. The KOA is family friendly, offering a number of fun activities in the play area, such as a trampoline, mini golf, and swimming.

Brandywine Creek Campgrounds in Lyndell may be a good alternative. In addition to full hookups for your RV, it features amenities like an indoor pool, free WiFi, and bathhouses with private rooms. This would make an excellent spot to use as a home base for your Arcola motorhome rental.

Exploring the City

Even this far out from Philadelphia, you can’t escape history. There are several landmarks and historic sites in the outskirts to explore in a travel trailer from Arcola, delighting history buffs and explorers alike. Valley Forge National Historical Park is very close by. The site of General Washington’s Continental Army’s winter camp, this site was made famous by not battle, but by extreme hardship that swept through the troops: influenza, typhoid, starvation, and harsh weather. After that winter, the lessons learned about military hygiene and organization were incorporated into modern armies and are still practiced today.

Here at this park, set out to explore the center where hundreds of artifacts and examples of uniforms are on display. The Brigade Huts, though not original, serve as a glimpse of what it was like to live as an ordinary foot soldier during that era. General Washington’s headquarters, which is a modest fieldstone farmhouse, still stands today.

Off the beaten path, the American Treasure Tour Museum in Oaks exhibits the weird, quirky, and kitschy within its halls. See the world’s largest slinky, dozens of classic cars which includes a 1956 Ford Thunderbird, antique corvettes, and 1907 ABC, one of the first cars ever made, dozens of automatic music machines, and an assortment of popular culture artifacts.

Don’t let the fun stop there. Head into the heart of Philadelphia and hit the tourist hotspots, like the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and the Franklin Institute. Dine on the Philly Cheesesteak and debate the merits of the best steak shops with the other connoisseurs. Walk the same streets as the founding fathers of this nation once strolled. Tour Betsy Ross’ home where she sewed the first American flag in 1776. Note: Betsy Ross’ home (and several other open to visitors) have very narrow halls and steep staircases, which are not suitable for strollers, wheelchairs, and walkers.

Philadelphia isn’t all about history. It has great food, fabulous music scene, theater, art galleries and museums lining the streets. Hop into your Arcola luxury motorhome and go exploring!
