The town motto of Sweet Home is “Oregon at its Best”, and it's certainly tough to argue otherwise when you rent an RV in the small Oregon community. The town was first settled in the mid-19th century when the first pioneers made their way across the vast expanses of middle America to reach the promised lands of the west. For ages, Sweet Home was primarily supported by a thriving timber industry, but since the closure of the sawmills in the 1980s, the town has gone in another direction to support itself.

Now, Sweet Home is more of a tourism haven than anything else, although it remains a hidden gem flying under the radar of most people. When you book an RV in Sweet Home, the nearby mountains and lakes offer limitless potential for exploration and recreation in the great outdoors. On top of that, this lovely community is a little over an hour’s drive to the stunning Oregon coastline, and close to the cities of Eugene and Portland. The town’s largest claim to fame is the three-day Oregon Jamboree, a massive country music festival that has been in operation since 1992 while using proceeds to benefit the community and other humanitarian projects. The Oregon Jamboree is an excellent time to book your trip to Sweet Home, but you can have an enjoyable experience in the town all year round.

Experience the Sites and Scenery

Oregon is easily one of the most naturally beautiful places in the United States and the area around Sweet Home is especially exceptional. Often referred to as the “Gateway to the Santiam Playground”, Sweet Home is one of the towns closest to the Cascade Mountains in the east. Its proximity to nearby lakes, rivers, and evergreen forests certainly solidify it as an amazing place to rent an RV. Foster Lake is on the outskirts of town and is a wonderful place to get a glimpse of that iconic Oregon outdoor beauty without having to drive too far. There are a few parks on the lakeshore, but Sunnyside Park is the largest. There is an off-leash dog park, and there are also picnic shelters, pavilions, boat launches for fishing in the lake, and an RV campground where you can stay with your Sweet Home camper rental. Santiam State Forest is a magical wilderness with just under 50,000 acres in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. This natural enclave was first established to protect local wildlife and forest areas but has evolved to become a hub for outdoor recreation too. You can hike between mighty Douglas firs, red cedars, Pacific yews, and an assortment of other native tree species, or go mountain biking, hunting, fishing, or kayaking too. There are five campgrounds to choose from if you'd like to park the Sweet Home travel trailer rental and stay overnight.

The Cascade Mountains themselves hold many secrets, and when you bring your Sweet Home RV rental to Willamette National Forest, you are sure to find a place of both solitude and blissful peace. There are well over one and a half million acres in the forest, with a fifth of it belonging to eight distinct backcountry wilderness areas. There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails weaving through the forest and a number of campgrounds where you can stay.

It would definitely be a shame to visit the state of Oregon and miss out on one of the state’s most precious natural parks, so be sure to venture off to Crater Lake National Park if you have the time. Crater Lake is one of the oldest national parks in the country and a bonafide wonder of nature. The name Crater Lake refers to the caldera of an ancient volcano that now holds one of the deepest lakes on the planet. The mesmerizing waters and unimaginable beauty of this natural gem should be seen at least once in a lifetime.

Where to Park It

What kind of “natural gateway” would Sweet Home be if it didn’t have a wealth of RV parks and campgrounds nearby for you to park when you rent an RV.

Foster Lake RV Resort is located on the edge of town, on Foster Lake. In addition to spacious RV sites, there are cabins, a fitness center, a playground, lakefront beaches, and a heated swimming pool on site.

Edgewater County Park and Marina sits on Foster Lake and has its own marina where guests can park their boats. You can swim in the reservoir, go fishing, or take a boat ride on the lake when you stay at this lakefront campground.

City Attractions

When you finally reach the town, there will be a few restaurants and shops. However, the town is quite small so you shouldn’t go in with the expectations of visiting a larger metropolitan area. There are loads of local golf courses, vineyards, and wineries in the Sweet Home Valley, so it has slowly become an upscale destination for retirees and pensioners.

Rio Theatre is a wonderful small-town movie theater that is locally owned and maintained. This historic building has been upgraded to bring it into the modern day and age, with popcorn and other current amenities. The historic Crawfordsville Bridge is a lovely sight to behold if you like to see old covered bridges. This iconic white bridge has been preserved by the town and is a fantastic place for a photo or two.

The East Linn Museum is housed in an old church and has thousands of artifacts, pieces of memorabilia, articles of clothing, and much more. You can learn so much about Linn County by touring the many exhibits or even dig up some information on your ancestors in the Linn County records.
